Avenger double days

LOS ANGELES - Even though it is their day off, Avenger players regularly take part in "Double Days" ... the team's community outreach program that makes a pair of visits to schools and/or hospitals on either Monday or Tuesday each week.

On Tuesday, April 4, fullback/linebacker Michale Spicer, offensive/defensive lineman Victor Leyva and "A-Team" dancers Jahnel and Jessica spent the day visiting with more than 600 children at the Western Avenue Elementary School in Los Angeles and Horace Mann School in Beverly Hills. The first school visit was to promote the team's "Stay in the Game to A.C.H.I.E.V.E." program. Later in the day the Avengers took part in a meet and greet to promote a fundraising efforts the school is doing with the Avengers.

"Kids this age need to have positive role models and I think the kids were very receptive to what we had to say," Leyva said. "When I was a kid I would have loved to have had a professional football players come to my school."

At Western Avenue Elementary, Spicer, Leyva and the two "A-Team" dancers, spoke to the students about the importance of getting good grades, being involved in school activities and stressed the importance of being honest. They also let the students know that this is the time to set a solid foundation for their futures through school. The four Avenger representatives also answered questions from the students, signed autographs and watched a highlight DVD of the Avengers in action.

At Horace Mann School, the four Avenger representatives discussed how they became apart of the Avengers organization and the importance of achieving goals through hard work and discipline. Students of the school were able to watch a segment of an Avengers game and received autographs from Spicer, Leyva and the two "A-Team" dancers.

The A.C.H.I.E.V.E. curriculum is based on the characteristics that the Avengers believe are the keys to a student's success: A - Academics, C - Courage, H - Honesty, I - Involvement, E - Enthusiasm, V - Values, E - Excellence. Avenger players, coaches and "A-Team" dancers use examples from their own lives to demonstrate that working hard in school can enable you're dreams to become reality.

The "Stay In The Game to A.C.H.I.E.V.E." program, which combines motivational and reward opportunities for students with the access to the experiences and leadership of Avenger players, coaches and "A-Team" dancers. The ultimate goal is to encourage and positively influence students, rewarding them for their achievements with two complimentary tickets to a Los Angeles Avengers home game at STAPLES Center (categories include: good attendance, straight A's, improving grades and the ninth man award).

This year, the Avengers distributed 30,000 ticket vouchers to over 100 schools in the Los Angeles area to support the teams' "Stay In The Game to A.C.H.I.E.V.E." program.

The Avengers are in their seventh season in the 20-year-old AFL. The defending Western Division champion Los Angeles Avengers (3-7) will face the Kansas City Brigade (1-9) on Sunday, April 9, at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, MO.

The game is set to kick off at 10 a.m. (Pacific). The contest will be broadcast live on AM 570.
