Garcia and Dragons make AFL 20 Greatest Moments list
April 5, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
New York Dragons News Release
The AFL has released the 20 greatest moments in AFL history. Taking the number 11 spot is the New York Dragons with Aaron Garcia highlighted for their July 7th, 2001 victory over the Carolina Cobras. This 99-68 game was the highest scoring in league history with Garcia throwing for an AFL- record 11 touchdown passes. Garcia went on to throw 104 touchdowns that season, setting another record.
"It's definitely an honor to be included in this list with all of the great moments to choose from in the 20 years of the Arena Football League," said Garcia. "It was a special night, an exciting season and a great way to introduce arena football to our great fans here on Long Island."
Kevin Swayne also played a major role in the 99 points, recording 11 receptions from Garcia for 171 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Rory Vacco, Director of Operations & Player Personnel has been with the franchise since day one.
"I've seen over 200 games with this franchise and this is definitely one that sticks out in my mind," said Vacco. "The team just looked unstoppable out there and the reaction from the fans was just something to remember."
The Dragons also currently hold a spot on the charts for the second highest scoring game set this season in Week Three's victory over Utah with a final of 84-81. Garcia threw for 10 touchdowns in this match-up.
Some other "Greatest Moments" include former Iowa Barnstormer QB Kurt Warner being named the Super Bowl XXXIV MVP on January 30, 2000 when he led the St. Louis Rams to a 23-16 victory over the Tennessee Titans. His season long performance brought unprecedented exposure to the AFL where he spent 3 seasons with the Dragons franchise.
The number one spot belongs to Jim Foster for his February 11, 1981 inspirational moment at Madison Square Garden when he came up with the idea of the Arena Football League while watching a Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) All-Star Game. As he watched the game he realized that football could be played indoor as well and he pulled out a manila envelope to start drawing up the idea. The Arena Football League is now in its 20th season and it all started with Foster and his inspiration.
