
Kannapolis Crushed by Captains in Series Opener

Kannapolis, NC ? The Kannapolis Intimidators were rudely handed a defeat by the Lake County Captains Wednesday night as the two teams began a four-game series at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium with the Captains winning, 13-2. The game snapped a modest two-game winning streak for the Intimidators (21-24, 53-62) and ended a four-game losing streak for the Captains (22-22, 53-61).
Lake County jumped out to an early 6-1 lead over Kannapolis after just three innings. The Captains chased Intimidators starter Jose Zazueta out of the game after just 2.1 innings. Zazueta (3-10) allowed six runs on five hits and five walks. In all, the Intimidators walked a season-high 10 batters on the night.
John Shelby hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning for Kannapolis, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. Shelby also added a single in the sixth inning.
In the fifth inning, Lake County doubled its lead, scoring five runs on three hits off Kannapolis reliever Mike Rocco. Rocco also allowed six runs and walked four hitters.
The Intimidators? only other run came on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Scotty Madsen.
Lake County starter Josh Tomlin (10-3) got the win, going five innings and allowing one run on four hits. Carlton Smith and Austin Creps each threw two innings of relief.
The game was marked by intense heat, with the game time temperature in triple digits. The heat index read 102 degrees at the start of the game. In the seventh inning, home plate umpire Mike Brundage removed himself from the game due to heat exhaustion. Bases umpire Matt Arcovio finished the game behind the plate as the only umpire. Temperatures are supposed to remain hot through the weekend.
The Intimidators and Captains will play the second game of the series Thursday night. It is the final Thirsty Thursday of the season at The Cannon and it is also Latin Heritage Night. Game time is set for 7:05 pm.
