Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review

January 2, 2006 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

The Kalamazoo Wings started their week on Wednesday (12/28) on the road against the Flint Generals. After trading goals in each of the first two periods, the K-Wings broke the game open in the third period. With the game tied at 3-3, the K-Wings scored four unanswered, including two goals from Tyler Rennette, which was part of a four-goal night for the K-Wings leading scorer. Flint added a late goal from Jason Selleke, but it wouldn't be enough, as the K-Wings went on to defeat the Generals 7-4.

The K-Wings returned home on Friday (12/30) to face the Fort Wayne Komets. Kalamazoo's Tim Turner gave his team the lead with a goal with just 10.1 seconds remaining in the opening period. Former Komet Dustin Virag gave the K-Wings some breathing room when his wrist shot beat Fort Wayne's Kevin St. Pierre to extend the K-Wings lead to 2-0 early in the second period. Kalamazoo added two more goals to close out the scoring en route to their 4-0 victory. Goaltender Joel Martin stopped all 27 shots he faced to earn his league leading 5th shutout of the season.

The K-Wings rang in the New Year in front of the season best 5,291 fans at Wings Stadium against the Muskegon Fury. The two most prolific scoring teams in the league would have a defensive battle to end 2005. With the game tied at 1-1, Muskegon's Jason Lawmaster scored his first goal of season with 4:30 remaining in the game to give the Fury a 2-1 victory over the K-Wings.

The K-Wings started 2006 with a late afternoon road game against the Port Huron Flags. Kalamazoo scored two goals in the first 1:07 of the contest and never looked back, as the K-Wings defeated Port Huron 5-2. The K-Wings were lead by both Joe Seroski and Tyler Willis, who each scored two goals. The victory placed Kalamazoo atop both the UHL and the Central Division.

Fast Forward
The K-Wings will continue their four-game road swing this Wednesday (1/4) against the Danbury Trashers. On the season, the K-Wings are 2-1-0 against Trashers, who start the week in first place in the Eastern Division. In their last 10 games, the Trashers are 7-0-3, which includes four straight victories.

Kalamazoo will finish the week on Friday (1/6) and Saturday (1/7) with back-to-back games against the Roanoke Valley Vipers. Roanoke starts the week in fourth place in the Eastern Division. While this will be the first trip to Roanoke for Kalamazoo, the K-Wings did defeat the Vipers in teams previous game at Wings Stadium.

Racking Up the Points
Forward Tyler Rennette is currently on the six-game point streak. The six-game streak is the longest current streak by a K-Wings player and is just two games shy of the K-Wings season long of eight games, also held by Rennette.

Martin Receives Award
Goaltender Joel Martin has been named the UHL's Southern Sports Supply Goaltender of the Week. Martin went 2-1-0 last week with a 1.34 goals against average and a save percentage of .956.

Top of the World
With the victory over Port Huron yesterday, the K-Wings now have more points than any team in the UHL. This is the second time this season that the K-Wings have had sole possession of first place in both the league and the Central Division.

Big Willy Style
K-Wings forward Tyler Willis has been on a goal scoring tear. Willis, who needs three more goals to reach 100 for his career, has scored three goals in his last three games.

The Obscure Stat of the Week
The K-Wings are undefeated on games played on Sunday. With their victory over Port Huron yesterday, the K-Wings are 4-0-1 on games played on the first day of the week
