
Kalamazoo loses 4-2 to Fort Wayne

KALAMAZOO - Taking a one-game to none lead in their best-of seven Divisional Series, the Fort Wayne Komets defeated the Kalamazoo Wings 4-2 in game one Friday night at Allen County Memorial Coliseum.
The Komets set the tone in the first period by outshooting the K-Wings 18-6. Goaltender Joel Martin stood on his head in the period stopping 17 shots including three highlight reel saves.
Fort Wayne's lone goal in the period occurred midway in the period during four-on-four hockey. Off a face-off win, Drew Daniels (1st) buried a slap shot from atop of the right circle to give the Komets the lead.
Battling back in the second period, Kalamazoo tied the game 1:59 into the stanza, when Gergo Nagy walked around Roman Will and scored his first of the postseason. Dating back to the regular season, Nagy has registered points in nine straight games.
The Komets climbed back ahead 9:58 into the period when Shawn Szydlowski (1st) stole the puck away from the K-Wings and slid it past Martin.
Striking before the end of the period, Cody Sol's slap shot deflected off of Eric Faille (1st) with six seconds remaining.
Growing the lead to three, Paul Crowder (1st) crashed the net and jammed in a rebound 7:55 into the third period.
Keeping the K-Wings off the board, goaltender Roman Will preserved the three-goal cushion midway in the stanza by stopping a Ludwig Blomstrand penalty shot.
The K-Wings closed out the scoring late with a power-play strike from Patrick Kennedy (1st).
Kalamazoo and Fort Wayne with battle in game two of the best-of-seven series tomorrow, Saturday, April 18th with a 7:30 p.m. encounter against at Allen County Memorial Coliseum.
The K-Wings will return to the Wings Event Center on Wednesday, April 22nd for a 7 p.m. face-off in game three of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series against the Komets.
As a reminder anyone coming to upcoming to events at Wings Event Center, including K-Wings hockey, may have to find alternate routes to the facility due to the closure of the Sprinkle Road exit (exit 80) on I-94.
