Madison Capitols News Release
MADISON, WI - In a back-and-forth game, the Madison Capitols dropped a 5-4 decision to the Muskegon Lumberjacks at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena on Friday night.
Madison (21-27-2-2) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 46 points. Muskegon (28-22-1-1) sits in third place in the Eastern Conference with 58 points.
Right wing Bobby Kaiser put the Lumberjacks ahead with his eighth goal of the season at 16:11 of the third period. Kaiser picked up a pass from left wing Jachym Kondelik at the right doorstep and was able to sneak it past goaltender Joey Lamoreaux for the final 5-4 score.
Former Capitols right wing Vincent de Mey put the Lumberjacks up 1-0 at 9:09 of the first period with his 18th goal of the season. Center Emilio Pettersen dug the puck out of the right corner and found de Mey on the left doorstep for a one-timer.
De Mey doubled Muskegon's lead to 2-0 with an unassisted goal at 3:23 of the second period. Lamoreaux halted the puck in the Capitols zone as Madison skated on the power play. De Mey stole the puck from Lamoreaux and flipped it into the open net for his 19th goal of the season.
As the Capitols power play came to an end, center Cade Borchardt lit the lamp with his 11th tally of the season. Defenseman Colin Felix held the puck at the center point before attempting to snap a shot. The puck deflected off a Lumberjacks' stick and over to Borchardt in the slot. Borchardt flipped a backhand shot past netminder Keegan Karki to bring the score to 2-1 at 6:38 of the middle frame.
Left wing Trey LaBarge tied the game at 2-2 with his third goal of the season at 2:19 of the third period. LaBarge picked up the loose puck at the Capitols blueline and skated down the right wing. As he approached the right face-off circle, he snapped a shot on net that beat Karki on the blocker side.
Madison took a 3-2 lead at 5:35 of the third period with left wing Mick Messner's 15th goal of the season. Center Anthony Callin sprung Messner in the neutral zone and the winger took off down center ice. Messner wristed a bullet over the glove of Karki to give the Capitols their first lead of the game.
Borchardt picked up his second goal of the night and 12th tally of the season at 7:15 of the third period to give the Capitols a 4-2 lead. Callin passed the puck from deep in the Capitols zone to Borchardt at the Lumberjacks' blueline. Borchardt skated in and roofed the puck over Karki's glove.
Left wing Noah Sullivan took on Lamoreaux in a one-on-one battle in which he won to bring the score to 4-3. The puck slipped down the left wing and Lamoreaux skated out to chip it away. Sullivan and Lamoreaux met the puck at the same time. The Lumberjacks forward slipped the puck through the netminder's legs and found the open net for his second goal of the season at 12:34 of the third period.
The Lumberjacks continued to battle back with center Anthony Del Gaizo's league-leading 37th goal of the season at 14:59 of the final frame. Defenseman Alexander Yakovenko backhanded the puck to left wing Matej Pekar as they skated into the Capitols zone. Pekar found Del Gaizo on the right doorstep for the wrist shot to tie the game at 4-4.
Lamoreaux (3-7-1-0) took his seventh loss of the season stopping 38-of-43 shots. Karki (22-14-0-0) earned his 22nd win of the season stopping 24-of-28 shots.
Madison went 0-for-3 on the power play. Muskegon was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Notables: Center Anthony Callin is on a three-game point streak, collecting seven points (1-6=7) in three games...Center Cade Borchardt recorded his third two-goal game of the season...Borchardt is on a three-game goal and point streak with four goals and one assist for five points.
