Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - Maybe Yogi Berra was right, "it isn't over till it's over." The Kalamazoo Wings erased a two-goal deficit with less than two minutes remaining in regulation and then scored early in overtime to defeat the Fort Wayne Komets 3-2.
A night after being held scoreless at home, Fort Wayne registered the games first goal 11:33 into the period with a power-play goal from Mathieu Curadeau. Besides being Curadeau's league-leading 5th power-play goal of the season, it also snapped a streak of 0 for 19 from the Komets against the K-Wings with man-advantage opportunities.
Curadeau's tally also gives him a league lead in overall goals scored with 12.
Despite plenty of chances, neither team was able to crack into the scoring column in the second stanza. The Komets out shot the K-Wings 14-12 in the period; however, the real opportunities came on the power-play. Kalamazoo went 0 for 5 on the power-play in the period, while Fort Wayne was 0 for 4.
On the power-play, David Hukalo (4th) deflected a Guy Dupuis shot from the point midway through the third period to extend the Komets leads to 2-0
.
Late penalties from Brad MacMillen and a double minor from Kevin Bertram left the door open for the K-Wings late in regulation.
Capitalizing on a 5-on-3 man-advantage, Mark Nebus (4th) tipped a Rod Aldoff shot with 1:45 remaining in the game to bring the K-Wings to within a single-goal.
With just under 10 seconds remaining in the period, Tyler Willis (3rd) extended his point streak to four games in heroic fashion, lifting a wrister over Nick Boucher to tie to game at 2-2.
Completing the trifecta last minute power-play goals, Willis found Lucas Drake, who one-timed his team leading 9th lamp lighter of the season to secure the 3-2 win for Kalamazoo.
The win marks the second time this season the K-Wings have clawed out of a third period deficit, with both decisions coming with an overtime goal (October 30th against Flint).
By earning points in tonight's game, Drake and Glenn Detulleo (2 assists) extended their point streaks to five games.
