MUSKEGON, Mich. - League-leading Muskegon erupted for nine goals in the first two periods, which included a hat-trick by Luke Stauffacher, to hand the Bloomington PrairieThunder a 9-5 International Hockey League loss Saturday before 2,240 people at L.C. Walker Arena.
The loss dropped the PrairieThunder's record to 5-8 ahead of Thursday's 7:35 p.m. Thanksgiving Day special game against Kalamazoo. All tickets for the game are $6.
Muskegon (9-3-0) scored five goals on 31 shots in the first two periods, netting five in the second period after posting four in the first period.
Stauffacher, who scored four points in the game, had two of his three goals in the second period. Alec Kirschner also scored two goals in the second period. The other Lumberjacks' goal in the second period came from Henry Kuster on a power play.
After falling behind, 9-0, the PrairieThunder finally broke its scoring drought with two goals in the final 1:36 of the second period. Corey Rutt scored his second goal of the season off assists from Riccardo Rigamonti and Adam Tomkow on the power play with 1:26 remaining in the period.
Brett Holmberg added his third goal of the year 61 seconds later off assists from Leo Thomas and Christian Ban.
The PrairieThunder added three goals in the third period from Don Parsons, Brent Clarke and Jon Booras. Getting assists were A.J. Bozoian and Tomkow.
Parsons' goal was the 673rd of his career, leaving him five short of breaking the all-time record for career goals in minor league professional hockey. Kevin Kerr holds the record of 677.
Stauffacher started the Lumberjacks to victory by scoring just 5:19 into the game. Adam Bartholomay added Muskegon's second goal 42 seconds later at the 13:59 mark.
Frank Littlejohn gave the Lumberjacks a 3-0 lead with 10:11 remaining in the first period. Lincourt then found the net with 7:22 left for a 4-0 advantage.
The PrairieThunder played without newly acquired defenseman Geoff Patton and veteran forward John Nail. Patton suffered a second-degree shoulder separation in Friday's loss at Kalamazoo.Nail continues to recover from a broken finger he suffered eight games ago. Both are expected back in action Thursday.
