Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Wings of the United Hockey League announce their selections in the 2005 UHL North American Amateur Draft.

The K-Wings first selection has local ties, as Kalamazoo selected defenseman Jim McNamara. The native of Macomb, Michigan played the past two seasons with Western Michigan University. Before joining the Broncos, McNamara played his first two seasons of collegiate hockey at St. Cloud State.

In the second round, the K-Wings used their selection they acquired from the Richmond RiverDogs in the Kyle Sheen trade from earlier this season to choose forward Dave Carpentier of Providence College. At 6-1, Carpentier, who has been a member of the Friars for the past four years, gives the K-Wings size upfront.

In the third round, the K-Wings made two selections. The K-Wings received their first pick of the round from the Sheen trade. With their selection from Richmond the K-Wings selected forward Todd Grant from Miami of Ohio. Grant just finished off his best season as a collegiate by tallying 33 points (15 goals, 18 assists).

With their second pick in the third round, Kalamazoo chose forward Mike Lalonde from Michigan State University. The forward has a knack for scoring goals, during his junior season (03-04), Lalonde led the Spartans in goals with 22.

In the fourth round, the K-Wings selected defenseman Ryan Tew. Tew played the past four seasons with the St. Norbert. This season, Tew was the Green Knights Assistant Captain.

In the fifth round, the Kalamazoo selected forward John Hartman of Michigan Tech. Hartman was a four-year standout with the Huskies.

With their final round of the UHL North American Amateur Draft the K-Wings selected defenseman Trevor Cook. Like McNamara, Cook played his college hockey at Western Michigan University.

The UHL North American Amateur Draft is for players that are 19 years of age or older who played in North America during the 2004-05 season. The draft consisted of six rounds with each UHL team selecting in reverse order of their current winning percentage. Each UHL team is permitted to protect up to four of their drafted players and place them on their final roster. In addition, each UHL team is allowed to protect two players for their team's playoff roster. These two selected players are exempt from the six games played requirement for players on the postseason roster.
