Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, Mich. - The Kalamazoo Wings have agreed to terms with Alex Mallet for the upcoming season, the team announced Monday.
Mallet (muh-LAY) is no stranger to Kalam?azoo, as the centerman played in 44 games with the K-wings in 2012-13 and another 14 games for Kalamazoo last season after being reassigned by the Vancouver Canucks. He finished last season with the Stockton Thunder after being part of a trade between Vancouver and the New York Islanders.
"Alex was deeply missed last season when his NHL contract was traded," Head Coach Nick Bootland said. "He's a momentum changer."
The 23-year-old's path to the pro ranks wasn't conventional, as the Montreal native went undrafted and unsigned in his first two years of eligibility. However, an 81-point (34 goals, 47 assists) explosion in the 20011-12 season with Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL made sure Mallet wouldn't go unnoticed again. He was drafted in the second round with the 57th overall pick by Vancouver in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft.
"Alex's physical play and nice touch around the net are his biggest assets," Bootland added. "He's a true power forward that can hit, fight, and will always stand up for his teammates."
The 6-foot-2 center has shown stable productivity in the ECHL since 2012-13. In 98 games played between Kalamazoo and Stockton, Mallet has tallied 62 points (23 goals, 39 assists) and 117 penalty minutes.
"This is the most important year of Alex's career," Bootland said. "He needs to remain consistent to earn a spot back at the AHL level."
Mallet has played 77 career AHL games with stops in Chicago and Utica, registering six points and 53 penalty minutes.
