Jupiter Hammerheads News Release

In the final game of the 2011 Fins & Feathers Series with Palm Beach, John Baker's leadoff triple set him up to score all the runs Jupiter needed, as a trio of Hammerhead pitchers tossed the team's league-leading 14th shutout for a 3-0 win.

Jupiter's win means the annual series between the only two teams in Minor League Baseball to share a facility ends with shared victory, split 9-9 between the Hammerheads and Cardinals. Palm Beach leads the all-time series 103-80.

Though Baker only caught 5 innings as he continues his rehab assignment from the Marlins, he came up big at the plate, denied a perfect 3-for-3 night only by center fielder Adam Melker's diving catch in the 2nd inning.

Baker started Jupiter's offensive night by driving Richard Castillo's first pitch of the game into left field. Despite his status as a rehabbing player, Baker was running for the triple, sliding in to beat the cutoff throw.

With that, Dallas Poulk's base hit put Jupiter up 1-0 after sending just two batters to the plate.

Though the pitching was far from perfect, the Hammerheads buckled down when they needed to, stranding a dozen Cardinals on base as Palm Beach went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.

Only one of starter Jose Rosario's six innings went 1-2-3, as the right-hander allowed five hits and five walks. But he also struck out five batters and induced two pop-ups and a double play, helping keep runs off the board.

Palm Beach put runners on 3rd base four times but couldn't score. In the 2nd, Rosario twice escaped jams. With one out and two runners in scoring position, Robert Stock grounded to shortstop Hanley Ramirez. The Marlins' All-Star went home with the throw and Baker stood in to apply the tag on Alan Ahmady. Then after a walk to load the bases, Rosario got a fly out to end the inning.

In the 7th, Palm Beach again put a runner on third with just one out, but Ahmady's grounder to second allowed Poulk to step on the bag and throw to first for an inning-ending double play.

Sergio Pedroza scored Jupiter's two insurance runs, both coming early in the game. In the 2nd, Pedroza doubled and came home on the first of two base hits by Jose Torres. Two innings later, it was Baker capping the scoring, his base hit to shallow center scoring one with the bases loaded.

That was more than enough, as Rosario was followed by Collin Cargill and A.J. Ramos to complete the shutout. Ramos struck out two in a perfect 9th for his 24th save of the year. Since playing in the midseason All-Star Game, Ramos has struck out 42 batters in 27.1 innings, allowing just four earned runs.

The Hammerheads now embark on their final roadtrip of the season, facing Charlotte for two games before heading to Fort Myers. The team then returns to Roger Dean Stadium to finish the season at home, hosting the Miracle on Saturday and Sunday.
