Jupiter Hammerheads News Release
The St. Lucie Mets scored five runs in the 6th inning, pulling away for a 6-1 defeat of Jupiter in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader.
Hammerheads starter Matt Montgomery gave up a home run to Pedro Zapata on the very first pitch he threw, but then settled in to allow just one more hit over the first five innings. But after giving up a pair of singles to lead off the 6th inning, Jupiter turned to new reliever Evan Reed to try and escape the jam.
Instead, Reed saw his first pitch lined back up the middle, scoring both of Montgomery's runners. After having elbow surgery last September, Reed had tossed just 8.2 innings of rehab work in the Gulf Coast League, and the Mets continued to knock the rust off him as the inning progressed.
After allowing another single, a wild pitch allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Reed got his first out on a ground ball back to first base, setting up an intentional walk to load the bases in hopes for an inning-ending double play. Instead, Cory Vaughn lofted a sacrifice fly and Rylan Sandoval drove in two more runs with St. Lucie's fifth hit of the inning.
St. Lucie starter Greg Peavey tossed a seven-inning complete game for the Mets, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out six batters. Jupiter's only run came in the 4th inning when J.L. Ortiz tripled and was driven in on a sacrifice fly.
Ortiz also singled in the 2nd inning, part of Jupiter's best chance to break the game open early. His base hit got Kyle Jensen to third base after the slugger led off the frame with a double. Peavey battled back with two strikeouts, but hit Alfredo Lopez to load the bases. But Peavey completed the hat trick, striking out Taylor Krick to end the threat.
The two teams were scheduled to make up a rainout from June 25th, but midway through the 3rd inning of Game 2, Mother Nature again interfered. Amidst heavy rains, the game was suspended with the Hammerheads leading 1-0 thanks to four hits in the 2nd inning. The game will be resumed Thursday at 5:05 p.m., to be followed by a seven-inning game. That contest is expected to see Jupiter's Opening Day starter Rob Rasmussen face off against the Mets' 27th-rated prospect Kyle Allen.
