Fort Myers Falls in Slugfest, 5-4

BRADENTON, FL (August 3rd, 2011) -- After a back-and-forth affair between the Miracle and the Marauders, Bradenton third baseman Elevys Gonzalez dealt the final blow, a one-out RBI single in the eighth inning to break a 4-4 tie, and the Marauders went on to defeat Fort Myers 5-4 on Wednesday night at McKechnie Field.

Matt Tone entered the eighth inning and yielded a one-out walk to Ramon Cabrera. After stealing second, Cabrera advanced to third on an infield hit, setting the stage for Gonzalez. Right-handed reliever Matt Hauser was summoned in from the bullpen to try and keep the game knotted, but Gonzalez fought off an inside fastball and dropped a hit into right field, scoring the go-ahead run. Tone (2-3) was charged with the loss.

Marauders reliever Kyle Waldron (1-1) got the win, tossing two scoreless innings in his Florida State League debut.

Bradenton took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning against Miracle starter Pat Dean, but Josmil Pinto quickly erased the deficit with a two-run blast in the second against Nate Baker. The two teams then exchanged blows as Carlos Paulino hit a line-drive home run off of Dean in the fourth, and Miracle outfielder Angel Morales answered with a two-run homer to dead center in the fifth against Baker.

With Fort Myers holding a brief 4-3 lead, Dean yielded his second home run of the night to Adelberto Santos to lead off the sixth inning. Dean battled his way through the rest of the sixth and seventh, and finished the night giving up a total of four runs on seven hits. Baker lasted six innings, giving up his four runs on only four hits.

Fort Myers (15-23, 49-60) has now dropped 12 of their last 13 and sit eight games back of first-place Bradenton (23-16, 53-36) with 31 games to play. The two teams will square off in two more games at McKechnie Field this season on Thursday and Friday. First pitch on both nights is set for 7 p.m.
