SEA DOGS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH FLYING SQUIRRELS - The Portland Sea Dogs split last night's doubleheader with the Richmond Flying Squirrels. Portland took game one 4-3 then fell in game two, 4-2. Trailing 3-1 in the sixth inning of game one, Ceddanne Rafaela led off the inning with a homer, bringing Portland with one run, 3-2. One batter later, Pedro Castellanos doubled to left, putting a runner in scoring position. Tyreque Reed lasered a home run over the wall in right-center, putting the Sea Dogs in the lead 4-3. The bullpen held down the final two innings, holding on for a 4-3 win.
In the second game, the Flying Squirrels scored in the bottom of the first against Sea Dogs starter Victor Santos. Shane Matheny led off with a walk. Brett Auerbach singled to center, and Rafaela made an error in center, scoring Metheny and moving Auerbach to third. Sean Roby followed with a two-run homer, giving Richmond a 3-0 lead. A two-run double by Tyler Dearden brought in both runners for Portland, making it a 3-2 score. Sean Roby led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo homer to left. It was his 18th of the season and extended Richmond's lead to 4-2.
RAFAELA SITS ATOP BIG LEAGUERS - Ceddanne Rafaela continues to make noise at every level this season and now leads all levels, including Major League Baseball, with 42 extra base hits. Rafael Devers (Boston Red Sox) and Jose Ramirez (Cleveland Guardians) each have 41 while Paul Goldschmidt (St. Louis Cardinals) has 40.
SANTOS GOES THE DISTANCE - Despite receiving his seventh loss of the season, Victor Santos tossed a complete last night in the second game of the doubleheader. It was the first time since July 31, 2021 that Santos tossed a complete game. In 2021, he tossed 7.0 innings against New Hampshire allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out five.
THOMPSON REMAINS DOMINANT - RHP Jake Thompson tossed another perfect inning last night, extending his shutout streak to nine games. During this streak, he has made nine appearances pitching 15.1 innings allowing six hits while walking six and striking out 15.
PEDRO IS IN THE HISTORY BOOKS - Pedro Castellanos extended his hitting streak to 18 games last night in the first game of the doubleheader, tying the record for the longest hitting streak by a Red Sox affiliated player in franchise history which was set by Brett Roneberg (4/27/04- 5/15/04). Victor Rodriguez (8/12/98-9/1/98) and Kevin Millar (7/18/97- 8/9/97) own the longest hitting streaks in franchise history with 21 games.
CASTELLANOS GETS THE CALL - Prior to tonight's game, Pedro Castellanos was promoted to Triple-A Worcester. In 61 games for Portland this year, Castellanos hit .279 with 18 doubles, one triple and eight home runs. He led the Sea Dogs in doubles and homers.
TWO NEW ADDITIONS TO PORTLAND - In a corresponding move, the Red Sox have promoted infielder Alex Binelas and catcher Stephen Scott. Binelas is ranked as the No. 17 prospect for Boston, according to Baseball America. He has hit .245 with 10 doubles, 14 HR and 43 RBI through 58 games with A+ Greenville to begin 2022. Scott was hitting .188 through 37 games with A+ Greenville with 8 doubles, 3 home runs and 14 RBI.
THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - June 24, 2003: Jeremy Owens and Justin Sherrod hit home runs and Tim Kester fired seven innings, allowing only two hits as the Sea Dogs beat the Akron Aeros, 4-2. Kester earned his fourth win of the season.
PITCHING MATCHUP - RHP Brett Kennedy will start tonight for the Sea Dogs. He last pitched June 18th at Reading and tossed 6.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits while walking three. He did not record a strikeout. Kennedy has pitched 6.0 in every start this year (four-consecutive start.
