Portland Sea Dogs News Release

Richmond, Virginia - Tyreque Reed went 1-for-3 while walking and scoring a run for the Portland Sea Dogs (29-38) as they fell to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (39-28) in the fifth game of the six-game series 6-1 on Friday at the Diamond.

Richmond drove in the first run of the game in the bottom of the third against Portland starter Brett Kennedy. Franklin Labour and Michael Gigliotti both reached base by walk. Shane Matheny brought in Labour with a one-out single, putting the Flying Squirrels in the lead, 1-0.

The Flying Squirrels continued to score in the bottom of the fourth, plating three runs this time against Kennedy. Tyler Fitzgerald led off with a base knock and, one out later, Armani Smith singled. Michael Gigliotti launched a ball over the wall in right, clearing the bases, and expanding Richmond's lead to 4-0.

Portland fought back in the top of the fifth inning against Richmond starter Kai-Wei Teng. Tyreque Reed worked a one-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Kole Cottam and Nick Sogard earned back-to-back walks to load the bases. Tyler Dearden hit a grounder to second where Richmond second baseman Brett Auerbach made an error, scoring Reed and cutting the lead to 4-1.

The momentum stayed with the Flying Squirrels, as they brought in two more runs to score against Sea Dogs reliever Dylan Spacke in the bottom of the fifth. Matheny led off with a walk, putting a runner on base for Frankie Tostado, who homered to right. It was his 10th homer of the year, adding to Richmond's advantage, 6-1

Teng worked into the seventh inning for Richmond. The Sea Dogs were able to notch their first hit of the game in the top of the seventh inning when Reed singled. After one more out, Teng's night would be done, holding the Sea Dogs to one unearned run over 6.1 innings. Portland could not capitalize on their first hit, falling silent for the rest of the night, dropping the game 6-1.

Teng (4-5, 4.79 ERA) tossed 6.1 innings, allowing just one unearned run on one hit, walking three, and striking out 11 in his fourth win of the season. Kennedy (1-3, 4.65 ERA) pitched 4.0 innings, surrendering four runs on five hits, walking three, and striking out seven in his third loss of the year.

The Sea Dogs and Flying Squirrels play the penultimate game of the six-game series on Saturday with a 6:05 PM first pitch at The Diamond in Richmond. Portland sends LHP Chris Murphy (3-5, 2.80 ERA) to the mound against Richmond's RHP Bryan Brickhouse (5-4, 4.50 ERA).
