Joliet Slammers News Release
JOLIET SLAMMERS (10-10) @ LONDON RIPPERS (10-10)
Sunday, June 10 - 12:00 p.m. CT
Labatt Park - London, Ontario, Canada
Game #21 - Road Game #12 (10-10), (5-6)
RHP #33 Jake Renshaw (0-1, 0.00 ERA) vs. LHP #24 Eric Katzman (0-2, 2.95 ERA)
Last time out...
The London Rippers (10-10) scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Joliet Slammers (10-10) by a final score of 5-4 Saturday night. The first 12 Slammers hitters went down in order before Erik Lis hit his second home run of the season to tie the game at one in the fifth. Joliet tallied two in the seventh on RBI singles by Kyle Maunus and Brad Netzel. But the Rippers chased starter Tommy Mendoza in the bottom half of the frame with back-to-back singles. Jim Schult entered the game and walked the first batter he faced. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Schult uncorked a wild pitch to give the Rippers their second run of the game. With one away and runners on second and third, the Slammers elected to pitch to Joash Brodin. Brodin, the league's leading hitter, made them pay with a three-run homer. Joliet would score one in the eighth but that was all as they lost their third straight.
For Starters...
Today marks the triumphant return of "Captain" Jake Renshaw from the Disabled List. His only start in 2012 came on May 22 against the Traverse City Beach Bums. Renshaw went three and two thirds innings in the game and took the loss, giving up three runs, none of them earned on only one hit. He walked three and struck out four. The right-handed pitcher developed a loyal following among the Slammers' faithful in 2011 as Joliet flew a pirate flag every time he started at Silver Cross Field. The "Captain's" home starts featured pirate themed sound effects and video board slides every time he struck a hitter out. Renshaw won his final seven starts of the regular season, finishing with a Frontier League best 13 victories. He was also extremely consistent last year for Joliet, never lasting fewer than five innings in the regular season. Renshaw tallied four complete games on the season, tying for third most in the league. He was a workhorse, leading the Slammers with 128 innings pitched.
Losing streak...
The Slammers need to win today to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season of four games.
Mr. Reliable...
Reliever Brian Smith is tied for the league lead in appearances at 11 and for good reason. Smith currently sports an ERA of 1.42 and 12.2 innings of work in 2012. This follows his rookie season in 2011 when he recorded an ERA of 1.24 in 43.2 innings. Smith usually enters in the eighth inning for Joliet.
Error indicator...
The Slammers are 2-8 in games when they make an error. They are 8-2 in games when they do not.
Best of the best...
The Slammers are tied with the Windy City ThunderBolts for the best team ERA in the Frontier League at 3.09. The Slammers pitching staff has held opponents to a .221 batting average, the lowest in the league.
Out-hit...
When the Slammers out-hit an opponent they are 9-3, but when the opponent out-hits the Slammers Joliet has a record of 0-7.
Mr. Clutch...
David Fox is hitting .246 on the season but with men in scoring position he's hitting a scorching .438 with a home run and 12 RBI.
Movin' on up!
RHP Gaby Hernandez became the fourth Slammers player to move on to affiliated baseball when his contract was purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks on May 21. He joins LHP Aaron Dott, Joliet native RHP Ryan Quigley and Darien native RHP Chris Pack as former Slammers in MLB organizations.
Transaction Wire...
The Slammers activated RHP Jake Renshaw from the Disabled List today.
