Last time out...
The Freedom rode another great outing from Cody Gray (3-0) to defeat the Crushers by a score of 6-2 on Tuesday. Gray went seven innings of one-run ball, scattering five hits along the way. He struck out six batters and did not walk anyone to pick up the win. The Freedom are now 5-0 when Gray starts. Florence took an early 2-0 lead on a RBI single from Collins Cuthrell and a RBI grounder from Sam Eberle. Lake Erie tallied a run in the first on a Jose Barraza RBI double but got shut down by Gray after that. Florence added a run in the fifth on another Cuthrell RBI single. Then they tallied three in the sixth as Travis Weaver delivered a two-RBI single and Zac Mitchell drove in a RBI double. Lake Erie tallied a run on a wild pitch that scored Trevor Stevens in the eighth but that was it for the Crushers offensively as Ed Kohout sent the side down in order in the ninth. The win moves the Freedom to a record of 4-3 this season against Lake Erie.
For Starters...
Chuck Weaver is coming off a complete game loss against the Rockford Aviators on July 23. He gave up six runs, five earned, on 11 hits in a 6-2 defeat for Florence. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings.
