Portland Sea Dogs News Release


ON SUNDAY - The Sea Dogs dropped the series finale to the Fisher Cats on Sunday, 9-7 at Delta Dental Stadium. The Sea Dogs were first to strike in the top of the first inning. David Hamilton led off with an infield single then stole second and then third base. Christian Koss lined an RBI single to right field and Portland led, 1-0. The Fisher Cats took the lead in the bottom of the same inning. After two consecutive singles by Rafaela Lantigua and Davis Schneider, Lantigua tied the game on an RBI lineout by Addison Barger. Schneider was able to cross the plate in a stolen base attempt by John Aiello and the Fisher Cats took the 2-1 lead. Stephen Scott blasted his third home run of the season in the top of the second inning, tying the game 2-2. The Fisher Cats took the 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth off a solo homer by Orelvis Martinez, his 21st of the season. Portland came charging back in the top of the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by Tyler Dearden and Wil Dalton plated both Scott and Kole Cottam putting the Sea Dogs ahead, 4-2. Ceddanne Rafala added another run to the tally when he hit into a force out at second base, allowing Dearden to score and the Sea Dogs led, 5-3. In the bottom of the sixth, Phil Clarke drove home two more runs for the Fisher Cats with a two-run single off of Jacob Wallace and the game was tied, 5-5. Martinez then scored the leading run off a wild pitch and the Fisher Cats were back on top, 6-5. Martinez drilled a three-run homer to left field to put New Hampshire back on top, 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Portland's final run came in the top of the ninth inning after Stephen Scott singled to right field, he scored on an RBI single by Cottam and the Sea Dogs fell, 9-7.

MATT BARNES JOINS SEA DOGS IN REHAB APPEARANCE - RHP Matt Barnes is scheduled to make a Major League Rehab Appearance with the Sea Dogs tonight. Originally Boston's 1st overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, Barnes made his sixth consecutive Opening Day roster in 2021 and earned his first All-Star Game selection (player ballot). Last season, he made 60+ appearances for the fifth time, the most such seasons in Red Sox history.

WELCOME TO PORTLAND, NICK NORTHCUT - Prior to tonight's game, infielder Nick Northcut was promoted to Portland from High-A Greenville. In 77 games with High-A Greenville this season, he hit .223 with 13 doubles and 26 home runs. He spent the entirety of 2021 with Low-A Salem and led Low-A East in SLG (.513), doubles (32), and XBH (51) and ranked 2nd in RBI (77), T-3rd in HR (17), and 4th in OPS (.865). Northcut's 26 home runs in 2022 is currently the second-most through all levels of Minor League Baseball.

NEW SERIES, SAME STREAK - David Hamilton extended his on-base streak to 15 games with a 1-for-3 performance on Sunday. He started the streak on July 3 and has logged a .259 average (15-for-58), two doubles, three homers, five RBI, and 10 walks with 13 strikeouts. With three more stolen bases Sunday, Hamilton has stolen 14 bases without being caught during his streak.

STILL IN THE LEAD - The Sea Dogs (14-7) have a half-game lead in the Northeast Division. They sit just in front of the Hartford Yard Goats (13-7). Portland is currently sporting the highest run differential in the second half, outscoring their opponents by 31 runs over 21 games. After a hot start that included a seven-game winning streak, the Sea Dogs have gone 5-5 over their last 10 games.

AWAY FROM HOME - During the first half of the season, Portland accumulated a record of 14-22 away from Hadlock Field. So far in the second half, the Sea Dogs have hit the road for a six-game series in Binghamton and a three-game set in New Hampshire. Over those two series, the Sea Dogs have racked up a 7-2 record on the road, which is currently the most wins of any Eastern League team on the road in the second half.

THIS DATE IN SEA DOGS HISTORY - July 26, 2017 - Jeremy Barfield knocked in four runs over the first 2 innings, leading the Sea Dogs to a 6-4 win at New Hampshire. Henry Owens worked five innings on three hits and one run to earn the win.

PITCHING MATCHUP - Sea Dogs RHP Bryan Mata takes the mound to open up the series in Hartford. Mata is coming off of a scoreless, 5.0 inning start against the Somerset Patriots on July 15. In that game, he struck out seven, tying his highest total with Portland this year. Overall, Mata has a 1-0 record with a 0.55 ERA. The right-hander hasn't surrendered an earned run since his first start in Portland on June 28 and has had an amazing month of July, posting a 0.00 ERA with 19 strikeouts and seven walks.
