FLORENCE FREEDOM (25-27) @ TRAVERSE CITY BEACH BUMS (31-19)

Saturday, July 18, 2015 - 7:05 p.m. ET

Wuerfel Park - Traverse City, MI

Game #53 - Road Game #23 (25-27), (12-10)

Last time out...

The Freedom took the series opener from Traverse City on Friday night by a final score of 4-1. Cody Gray struck out a career high nine batters in five innings of shutout ball to earn his first pro win. The Freedom pitching staff struck out 14 batters, matching their season-high for K's in a game. Florence got on the board in the third as two runs scored on a Collins Cuthrell RBI fielder's choice. Jose Vargas threw to second for one out, but Zac Mitchell's hard, clean slide into second forced a throwing error by Alex Tomasovich. The wild throw to first allowed Daniel Fraga to come around from second base to score. Meanwhile Travis Weaver had already scored from third and Florence led 2-0. Cuthrell drove Fraga home in the fifth when he hit a grounder in the hole at short. Sam Bumpers made a diving stop and tried to get Mitchell at second but Mitchell beat the throw and everyone was safe as Fraga scored to make it 3-0. Justin Harris added a RBI single in the sixth.

For Starters...

Chuck Weaver is coming off a no-decision against Schaumburg on July 10, going six and a third innings, allowing two runs on five hits, walking three and striking out five in a game the Freedom eventually won 3-2. He faced the Beach Bums on June 3 and suffered his only loss of the season, going five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits in a 6-3 defeat. Weaver shined in 2014 as he finished the season with a 2.65 ERA, good for first on the team and fifth in the Frontier League. In 17 starts, Weaver went six or more innings 13 times. Weaver was signed by the Freedom in June 2013 after he finished up his collegiate career at IPFW. He had a solid rookie season, posting a 4-2 record with a 3.70 ERA in 14 appearances, 12 starts. The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native started 13 games as a senior for the Mastadons, posting a 2-5 with a 3.57 ERA. Weaver threw two complete games as a senior and pitched 70.2 innings. He played two years for IPFW after transferring from Vincennes University where he was named to the NJCAA All-Academic team.
