Game #38- Road Game #15 (17-20), (4-10)

Last time out...

The Florence Freedom (17-20) got an outstanding performance from Cincinnati native Casey Henn (3-2) and knocked off the River City Rascals (23-16) by a final score of 4-1 Sunday night in front of a sell-out crowd of 4,266 fans at UC Health Stadium. Henn went seven shutout innings, scattering five hits and striking out six while walking two to pick up the victory. River City threatened multiple times but ended up stranding nine men on base. The Freedom picked up a run in the second inning without a hit. Nick Stein reached on a strike out and wild pitch. He would steal second and go to third on a throwing error. Stein scored on a wild pitch. In the third Sam Eberle hit a home run to put the Freedom up 2-0. The Freedom got two runs in the fourth as Ryan Miller delivered a clutch two-out, two-RBI single to make it 4-0 Freedom. River City's only run came in the eighth on a Zach Kometani RBI double.

For Starters...

Peter Gehle is making his eighth start of the season for the Freedom. He is coming off a loss to the Evansville Otters on June 25 where he went four and a third innings, his shortest outing of the season. He gave up four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Prior to the loss, the left-hander had won two consecutive starts. Gehle, 26, is a former 27th round draft pick of the Chicago White Sox in 2010 out of Azusa Pacific University. The Flagstaff, Arizona native spent two years in the White Sox organization before joining Sioux Falls of the American Association in 2012. He spent 2013 in the AA as well, this time with the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Against the Grizzlies...

The Freedom went 4-2 against Gateway in 2013.

To open...

The Freedom are 6-7 in series openers this season.

Where's the offense?!

The Freedom have the lowest team batting average in the Frontier League at .230 and have scored the fewest runs with 139 runs on the season. The Freedom have scored less than three runs in a game 13 times this year and are 1-12 when they do so.

Road Woes...

The Freedom are 4-10 away from UC Health Stadium and have yet to win a road series as they have dropped five consecutive road series to start the 2014 season. The team ERA is 4.49 on the road compared to 3.36 at home. That being said, on offense Ben Kline is hitting .361 on the road and Joe Staley has a .302 batting average away from UC Health Stadium.

Staley Smash...

Joe Staley leads the Freedom in home runs (5) and RBI (25). Staley has not hit a home run on the road this season. His 25 RBI are nine more than the second highest total on the team: Sam Eberle's 16 RBI.

June swoon...

The Freedom went 10-13 in the month of June after going 7-7 in the month of May.

Six inning reference...
