Juice Blank Peanuts In Series Opener

Albany, GA- Two days off helped sharpen the Bradenton Juice as they knocked off the top team in the South Coast League the South Georgia Peanuts 5-0 on Monday in the opener of a three game series. Lavelle Morgan had a very good start for the Juice and Bradenton got timely hitting to snatch the top spot in the league's second half standings from the Peanuts.

Bradenton started the scoring in the third inning with Lavelle Morgan drawing a leadoff walk off of Dumas Garcia. After Morgan reached base Garcia left the game with an injury and Jared Doyle came on in relief for South Georgia. Up next Julius Thames hit a bunt single and Brenan Hererra followed with a sacrifice bunt. Then Al Corbeil grounded out to first base plating Morgan and putting the Juice up 1-0.

The Juice added two more runs in the 4th when Mikela Olsen led off with a walk and then Luke Barganier singled to center field and Drew York followed with an infield single to load the bases. Willie James then grounded into a fielder's choice that Olsen scored on giving Bradenton a 2-0 advantage. With two outs starting pitcher Lavelle Morgan helped his own cause smacking a single to left field that plated Barganier giving the Juice a 3-0 cushion.

Another inning means more another run for Bradenton as the Juice scored a run in the 5th inning. Brenan Hererra led off with a double and Al Corbeil followed by hitting a ball that went through the legs of first baseman Dustin Taylor that Hererra scored on giving the Juice a 4-0 lead.

Bradenton added its final run in the Top of the 6th inning when Drew York led off with a single and Willie James followed with a single to left field. Then Lavelle Morgan hit a sacrifice bunt and with York on third base Julius Thames hit a sacrifice fly to right field that York scored on giving the Juice a 5-0 advantage.

Lavelle Morgan (5-4) was dominant on the mound for the Juice going 7 innings, allowing 0 runs on 2 hits, walking 3 and striking out 5 batters. He retired the Peanuts in order from the 3rd through the 6th innings.

Dumas Garcia (6-2) did not last long for South Georgia, departing in the 3rd inning with an injury as he took the loss pitching 2 innings, allowing a run (earned) on 2 walks and he struck out 2.

This was the second time that South Georgia's been shutout this season as they fell into second place in the second half standings. The Peanuts are 7-4 in the second half and 40-15 overall while the Juice lead the Peanuts by half a game in the second half standings. Bradenton is now 8-4 in the second half and 32-24 overall in 2007.

Of note for the Juice Brenan Hererra went 2-4 with a single and a double and Drew York went 2-4 with 2 singles and a run scored. Juice newcomer Willie James went 2-4 and he is now 6-13 (.462) at the plate.

The pitcher with one of the best ERA's in the league LHP Brian Gartley (2.25) is scheduled to get the start for the Juice in the middle game of the series on Tuesday.
