Redfish Fall To Foxhounds

July 24, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Charlotte County Redfish hoped to make it two in row against the Foxhounds one night after claiming an emotional victory in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Redfish though couldn't make it two in a row as 'Hounds starter John Ducey shut down the bats as he only allowed 1 on 2 hits to take a 9-5 win and force a rubber game.

Celson Polanco, like Gomez the night before, looked be sharp early as he set down six in a row to start the ballgame with 3 strikeouts. Though Aiken reached him for 3 hits in the 3rd inning, Polanco got some help from his defense as Billy Hogan started a 5-4-3 double play and also snagged a Garth McKinney liner to end the inning with nothing across. However, that was the last inning that Polanco would be in control as things began to unravel quickly after he recorded two quick outs in the 4th inning. Tim Sweeney tripled to the right field corner and was plated on a Bradley Key double into left field. Polanco then plunked Ben Bando and balked the runners into scoring position. Key and Bando came around to score when Will Gonzalez drilled a pitch past Polanco's outstretched glove up the middle and Aiken had a 3-0 lead for the second straight night.

The Redfish tried to get back into the game using their speed in the bottom of the 4th inning. Millard Dawson drew a leadoff walk and came all the way around from first to score as Hogan dropped a single into left field that was misplayed by Chad Miller and the 'Fish were down 3-1. That was as close as Ducey (1-1) would let them get as he retired the next 5 batters he faced and finished the night with only 2 hits in his 5.0 innings of work.

Aiken padded their lead in with a run in the 5th and 6th inning with both resulting from Redfish defensive miscues including another Polanco balk and throwing error. One great defensive play was Brad Thoma sliding to first base to retire Tony Harper. Polanco (0-4) exited after the 6th inning, but the Redfish bullpen couldn't right the ship. Aaron Simmons, who made his 3rd appearance, started off strong striking out the first batter he faced but then surrendered a double to Garth McKinney. With two outs and pinch-hitter Kelly Hunt, the league-leader in homeruns coming to the plate, Charlotte County chose to intentionally walk him to go after Sweeney. This turned out have the opposite effect as Sweeney, who finished the night 2-for-5, drilled one off the leftfield foul pole to put the 'Hounds in front for good 8-1.

Charlotte County did make it close late in ballgame against the Aiken bullpen. With the bases loaded in the 8th inning, Millard Dawson chopped a single in front of home plate scoring Thoma, who walked, and Aaron Simmons came home on a Billy Kovatch sacrifice fly to make the score 8-3. After Aiken added a run in the top of the 9th inning off two more Redfish errors, Charlotte County answered with a pair, but the bats couldn't make up for the defense as the 'Hounds took a 9-5 win.

The Redfish and the Foxhounds face off in the rubber game tomorrow night, July 24th. Tomorrow night is "Local Mascot Night" with Frisbee giveaway presented by Olde World Restaurant. The probable starters are LHP Brandon Camardese and RHP Tim Drew. Game time is set for 7:05 PM. All Redfish games can be heard on 1070 AM WKII and online at www.redfishbaseball.com.
