League Hands Out Fines, Suspensions

July 24, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL) News Release

CONYERS, GA - The South Coast League of Professional Baseball today handed out the stiffest penalties in league history in response to the activities on Friday, July 20th in Macon, GA between the South Georgia Peanuts and Macon Music.

Peanut's reliever Mike Colacchio, down by a wide margin in the 7th inning, apparently threw at opposing Music batter Carlos Arroyo. As a result, Arroyo made his way to the mound for a confrontation. Eventually, both benches and bullpens would empty, and the game would result in a forfeit by the Peanuts.

In response to the activities stemming from Friday nights contest, the South Coast League has issued the following fines and suspensions.

Music OF Carlos Arroyo - 2 Game Suspension and Fined

Peanuts RHP Mike Colacchio - 3 Game Suspension and Fined

Peanuts 1B Brandon Woolard - 3 Game Suspension and Fined

Peanuts Pitching Coach Buddy York - Fined

Peanuts Manager Wally Backman - 8 Game Suspension

Backman, who was ejected during the second inning of the contest, was not the Peanuts manager of record during the altercation, but will serve the suspension nonetheless.

"Although Wally was not involved in the game at the time, he has accepted full responsibility for his coaching staff's actions," said SCL Chief Operating Officer Chris Allen. "The decision to forfeit a contest under any circumstances is not acceptable and all parties involved (coaching staff, players, umpires) understand that this will not be tolerated by the league."
