Redfish Shut Down 'Hounds

Charlotte County Redfish News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE, FL- The Redfish came in tonight's ballgame against the Foxhounds for their 9th rubber game of the season and 2nd in consecutive series. Redfish southpaw Brandon Camardese and Aiken's Tim Drew were locked in a heated pitcher's duel that only saw 2 hits and 7 base runners combined through 7 innings. Brad Thoma came through large for the ‘Fish as he started two great double plays and scored the games only run in the bottom of the 8th inning as the Redfish took their first series of the second half in a 1-0 thriller.

Both starters went back and forth all evening and never seem to lose control or focus on the mound. Camardese retired the first 4 batters he faced before surrending a walk to Ben Bando in the 2nd inning. This didn't faze him as he induced to ground ball outs to get out of the inning.

Camardese set down the next 6 hitters in order and picked up 3 more strikeouts. Bando, who seemed anxious to play villain, singled between Hogan and Thoma to lead off the 5th inning. Camardese and his defensive quickly changed that he induced a ground ball and Thoma started a perfect 6-4-3 double play. He then got Will Gonzalez to chop one back to the mound that Camardese underhand tossed to Lehmann for a modified 1-2-3 inning.

Drew was up to the challenge as he set down 16 straight batters to start the game. Jared Williams broke up Drew's perfect game attempt as he drew a walk in the 6th inning. Williams was the first base runner to reach second as Camardese laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Drew though got out of the inning and the scoreboard was still blank.

Aiken seemed as though they had timed Camardese in the top of the 7th as Bradley Key doubled off the wall in left-center for the only extra-base hit allowed by either pitcher. The Redfish pitched around Tim Sweeney, who had hurt them the night before, to put two on with 1 out bringing Manager Cecil Fielder to the mound to discuss how to pitch Bando. Whatever was said worked as Camardese induced another textbook 6-4-3 double play to end the inning.

"Brandon was working so hard and for Cecil to come out and say ‘Let's get the ground ball,'" said shortstop Brad Thoma. [Turning the double play] was huge and even though we had no hits at that point in the game, we basically took the momentum from them. It was almost like a dagger, I think."

The Redfish notched their first hit against Drew in the bottom of the 7th inning to break-up the no-hitter, though they still couldn't crack the scoreboard. Camardese kept it rolling with a 1-2-3 8th inning and picked up a single game high 8th strikeout and the momentum continued to build as the Redfish bats came up in the bottom of the inning.

Thoma came through with a one-out single to left and Williams took one for the team, as he was hit-by-pitch. Camardese exited with 8 great innings of 2 hit baseball as Fielder brought Aaron Simmons in to pinch-hit. Simmons came through with a flare to left and the bases were loaded. Fielder again went to his bench pinch-hitting for Millard Dawson with Jason Hurst. Hurst came through with a hit he'll remember for a while as he flied out deep to centerfield that allowed Thoma walk home and give the Redfish a 1-0 lead.

Ryan Amason, just signed prior to ballgame, came on in relief and was light's out. Amason struck out the side in the top of the 9th inning claiming his 1st save in Redfish uniform. "Going out there, I just wanted to my best and make sure we get that win," said Amason. After he recorded the final out, William Plaza met Amason in front of the mound and said to him, "Great job. Welcome to the club."

The Redfish welcome the South Georgia Peanuts to the Charlotte Sports Park for a 3 game series beginning Thursday July 25th. Game time is set for 7:05 PM.
