
Judges Annoucned for Charity Big Gloves Boxing Throwdown

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels, Double-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants, are excited to announce the three celebrity judges have been announced for the inaugural Charity Big Gloves Boxing Throwdown on Saturday, May 17th at The Diamond presented by Richmond.com. Publisher and President of the Richmond Times- Dispatch Tom Silvestri, Mekong's Chief Beer Officer (CBO) An Bui and Sugar Shack Donuts General Manager of Donut Awesomeness Michael Goins will lend their services as the official judging trio of the event. Additionally, several new matches have been announced that include the RVA Beard League and The Source House of Shoes as well as a pair of interns fighting for a dozen donuts (newly announced matches are italicized below). The event participants range from all areas of the Richmond spectrum in an effort to raise money for Operation Renovation, a dedicated community impact project to renovate 12 Richmond youth baseball facilities. Event gates open at 5:00PM with the bouts scheduled from 6:00-8:00PM. Happy Hour drink specials are available for the entire event. About the Judges :
Tom Silvestri Is the President and Publisher of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and Vice President of the Richmond Group, BH Media Group. In June 2012, BH Media Group named Tom to its leadership team as the vice president of its new Richmond Group, reporting to WME President Doug Hiemstra. He was named president and publisher of The Times-Dispatch, Media General's second largest newspaper in January 2005. As an advocate for the importance of journalism, Tom is a former deputy managing editor of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, where he helped create three news departments and several stand-alone sections, and launched a training program that attracted national attention for its breadth and reality-based approach. Before joining the Times-Dispatch, Tom was a reporter and editor for the Gannett Westchester (N.Y.) Newspapers
An "Mekong" Bui is the CBO (Chief Beer Officer) of Mekong Restaurant. Since 1995, under An's guidance's, Mekong has received numerous award and recognition as one of America's Best Beer Bars due to their beer offerings and affordable food pairings. An's slogan "Beer is the Answer" is known throughout the region and his affable smile and personality is an RVA staple. An is developing his own small batch brewery adjacent to Mekong that will appropriately be called "The Answer".
Michael Goins is the General Manager of Donut Awesomeness at Sugar Shack Donuts. Since opening in June of 2013 Sugar Shack Donuts (located on Lombardy St.) has taken Richmond by storm with their delicious and often adventurous donut selections. Goins has been running the ship alongside owner Ian Kelley as the company prepares to open a second location downtown. Goins and Sugar Shack will graciously be providing a dozen donuts to the hungry intern winner of the Food Fight bout.
