Betts Named April Player of the Month

Portland, ME - The Eastern League is pleased to announce that Portland Sea Dogs second baseman Mookie Betts has been named the Eastern League Player of the Month for the month of April. Betts batted .430 (40-for-93) with 10 doubles, one triple, four home runs, 30 runs scored, 13 RBI, 10 stolen bases, a .481 on-base percentage and a .688 slugging percentage in 22 games during the opening month of the season for the Sea Dogs. The 21-year old kicked off his season by leading off his first career Double-A game with a home run in a 5-0 win at Reading and he continued to hit throughout the month, collecting at least one hit in all but one of the 22 games he played in during the month. Mookie finished the month of April leading all Eastern League players in batting average (.430), runs scored (30), hits (40), extra-base hits (15), total bases (64), on-base percentage (.481), slugging percentage (.688) and OPS (1.169). He also ranked among the monthly leaders in stolen bases (10-2nd), doubles (10-3rd) and home runs (4-tied 8th).

Betts, who is a native of Brentwood, Tennessee, is hitting .412 with 35 runs scored and 14 stolen bases in 27 games for the Sea Dogs this season. He has reached base in all 27 games he has played in this season with Portland and has reached base in 57 consecutive regular season games dating back to last season with the Salem Red Sox of the Class-A Carolina League.

In addition to winning this award, the 5'9", 156 lb. slugger was also named the Eastern League Player of the Week for the period of April 3rd-April 13th after hitting .457 (16-for-35) with five doubles, one homer, 11 runs scored, four RBI and four stolen bases in nine games.

Mookie, who entered the season rated by MLB.com as the fifth best prospect in the Red Sox organization, was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the fifth round of the 2011 draft out of John Overton High School in Nashville, Tennessee.
