New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats defeated the Trenton Thunder by the score of 6-0 on Tuesday evening at New Britain Stadium.

New Britain has now won five straight games and put together their first shutout victory of 2014 on the back of great pitching performances from both starter LHP Taylor Rogers and reliever RHP Cole Johnson. Rogers scattered five hits along 6 1/3 innings of work, walking two and striking out five - his record improves to 2-3. Johnson worked 2 2/3 innings, giving up no hits, no walks while striking out two.

New Britain jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to a pair of base hits from 1B Kennys Vargas and DH Reynaldo Rodriguez.

The Cats continued their assault on Trenton starter LHP Matt Tracy in the bottom of the third - picking up three runs on two hits and taking advantage of a brief period of wildness from Tracy. The biggest hit of the frame was LF Daniel Ortiz's two-run single to send home 3B Nate Hanson and Vargas.

The home club made it a 6-0 game in the fourth on a fielder's choice grounder from Vargas that allowed SS A.J. Pettersen to scamper home after getting on base via walk from Trenton reliever RHP Manny Barreda.

Tracy falls to 3-2 in the loss after going 3 innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on four hits while walking four and striking out two.

Wednesday will see the continuation of the Baseball in Education series at New Britain Stadium. The Cats send RHP Taylor Duffey to the hill for the 10:35 a.m. start to face off against Trenton starter LHP Jeremy Bleich.
