Josh Labandeira Called Up
September 17, 2004 - Eastern League (EL1)
Harrisburg Senators News Release
The Harrisburg Senators announced today that infielder Josh Labandeira has been called up to the major leagues by the Montreal Expos. The need was created for the Eastern League all-star when the Expos traded shortstop Alex Gonzalez to the San Diego Padres last night.
Labandeira joins the Expos in Philadelphia where the team is to play a three-game set with the Phillies this weekend.
The 25-year-old Labandeira batted .270 in 134 games this season for the Senators with nine home runs and 33 runs batted in. He was selected to play in the Eastern League all-star game held in Bowie this past July.
Josh becomes the second member of this year's Senators team to be promoted to the major leagues following Shawn Hill who pitched in three games with Montreal earlier in the season.
In a poll of league managers, Labandeira was recently named in Baseball America's 2004 Best Tools Survey as the Eastern League's top defensive shortstop, and as the owner of the EL's top infield arm. Labandeira was the Expos' 6th-round selection in the 2001 First-Year Player Draft out of Frenso State, where he was the '01 WAC Player of the Year.
