Trenton Thunder News Release

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, and Wachovia Bank have announced the grant recipients of the 2004 Educational Winner's Circle.

The Boys and Girls Club of Trenton/Mercer County is the main recipient and will receive $25,000 to help them fund the "No Child Left Behind Tutoring Center". The other recipients are the Young Scholars Institute PREP Program and Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic's Trenton Learning Through Listening Program. They will each receive secondary grants of $7,614, a total that is based on ticket sales for the season.

The Thunder and Wachovia Bank developed the Educational Winner's Circle in 1994 in an effort to support local non-profit organizations that enhance educational opportunities. Both the Thunder and Wachovia Bank donate five cents for every ticket sold during the baseball season. Since the inception of the Educational Winner's Circle, more than $448,300 has been donated to groups in the region.

"When the Thunder were started eleven years ago we set out to be a good community partner as well as a destination for affordable family entertainment," said Thunder General Manager Rick Brenner. "The Educational Winner's Circle was one of our first community programs and after eleven years, it still brings me great joy to award grants to programs that benefit area education like the Boys and Girls Club, Young Scholars Institute and Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic. I'd like to thank our fans and Wachovia for making these grants possible. Their support is instrumental to the strength of these awards".

According to Wachovia Regional President, Susanne Svizeny, education is the focus of Wachovia's philanthropic strategy. "The Educational Winner's Circle is an especially appropriate program for us to support," she said, "and the financial resources this program provides to grass-roots agencies pays dividends many times over. Clearly helping youngsters reach their full potential is one of the best ways to build strong neighborhoods and sustainable communities."

Organizations are invited to contact the Thunder to receive applications when the baseball season begins in April. The grant applications are reviewed by the Princeton Area Community Foundation, and the final selections are made by representatives of the PACF, the Thunder, and Wachovia. Organizations who have received main grants in previous years include the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed Association, Rider University's Minding Our Business, Young Scholars Institute, Martin House, Isles, Anchor House, Newgrange, Young Audiences and the Trenton After School Program.
