Syracuse Mets News Release
Allentown, PA - On Friday night at Coca-Cola Park the Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, defeated the Lehigh Valley IronPigs by a score of 7-0. Chiefs starter Jason Jones pitched perfectly into the 8th inning before giving up a two out single to Domonic Brown. Kevin Mench, Seth Bynum, and Justin Maxwell all hit home runs in the winning effort.
Syracuse (47-36) opened the scoring against Lehigh Valley (32-50) in the first inning with an RBI single from Chase Lambin. He scored Boomer Whiting who had led off the game with a single. For Lambin, it was his team leading 41st RBI of the year.
The offense would continue into the fourth inning where Kevin Mench hit his third home run of the year to make it 2-0. Seth Bynum, activated on Friday after a 50-game layoff on the restricted list, hit his first home run since May 6th for the Chiefs. It was his fifth of the year.
The Chiefs tacked on three ore runs in the eighth inning with a flurry of baserunners. Consecutive walks to start the inning to Maxwell and Lambin put runners at first and second for Jason Botts. He doubled into the right field corner for his 14th and 15th RBI of the year. Botts now has an RBI in four of his last five games. Kevin Mench followed Botts with a run scoring double to the left field corner to plate Botts. The score was 6-0 after eight innings.
Justin Maxwell hit an opposite field homer over the thirty-foot wall in right field with two outs in the ninth to make it 8-0 Syracuse. Maxwell has now hit five home runs for the Chiefs in 2010.
Syracuse starter Jason Jones (1-2) retired the first twenty three batters without allowing a base hit or a walk. In the eighth inning with two outs, Domonic Brown singled up the middle to break up the bid for a perfect game by Jones. This was just the third start of the year with Syracuse for Jones who earlier this year was not in affiliated baseball.
Jones was pinch hit for in the ninth and Collin Balester pitched the bottom half of the inning. He allowed a base hit to Chris Duffy and struck out one, facing just four to end the ballgame.
Brian Mazone (5-8) took the loss for Lehigh Valley. He went six innings allowing three earned runs on six hits. Mazone struck out nine batters and walked just two. On the night Mazone, along with Brian Gordon and Michael Stutes combined to strike out 17 Chiefs batters.
Syracuse plays a one game series on Saturday against Scranton-Wilkes/Barre. Shairon Martis (5-5, 4.07) will start for Syracuse and Zach McAllister (6-5, 4.24) will start for the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
