Jones, Braves Walk-Off Again

June 4, 2007 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release

The night started as a pitching duel between Mississippi's James Parr and West Tenn's Robert Rohrbaugh, but what was a low-scoring game turned into a shootout once the bullpens got involved. James Parr, in only his second AA start, gave up two runs on three hits in six innings pitched. Mississippi's bats struck first, then West Tenn came back to tie, but the M-Braves got the last laugh as Brandon Jones hit another walk-off single to give the M-Braves the win in this game and the series.

After three innings of dominant pitching from Robert Rohrbaugh, Mississippi broke through in the fourth. Mike Rozema led off the inning with his first triple of the year and scored one batter later when Brandon Jones lined his 13th double of the season down the left field line. Jones came in to score the Braves second run on a single to center by Diory Hernandez. After four, Mississippi led 2-0.

James Parr held the Diamond Jaxx in check through the first five innings, but the Mariners' affiliate got on the board in the sixth. Charlton Jimerson singled, stole second and third, and scored on a sac fly by Prentice Redman. Marshall Hubbard then reached first when he was hit by a pitch. A Matt Tuiasosopo walk moved Hubbard up to second and Jeff Frazier's single brought him to the plate to tie the score at two.

Just as West Tenn got back in the game, Mississippi reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Jones and Matt Esquivel got back-to-back singles to start the inning. After Hernandez grounded into a double play that gave the M-Braves two outs in the inning, the Braves reeled off four straight hits to plate four runs. Mark Jurich doubled in Jones, moved to third on a single by Clint Sammons, and scored on a double by Josh Burrus. Van Pope came to the plate with two outs and runners at second and third and doubled to center scoring Sammons and Burrus to give Mississippi a 6-2 lead.

The four-run lead wouldn't last as Brad Nelson struggled on the hill for the M-Braves. Luis Oliveros started the inning by getting plunked and Erick Monzon and Sebastien Boucher followed with a single and a walk, respectively, to load the bases. Jimerson's double down the left field line plated Oliveros and Monzon and Boucher came in to score on a sac fly by Redman to cut the M-Braves lead to 6-5. Jimerson moved to third on a fly out by Hubbard and came in to score the game-tying run on a single by Tuiasosopo.

Josh Burrus was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Van Pope bunted him over to second and Carl Loadenthal was intentionally walked to set up the double play. After Mike Rozema struck out Brandon Jones stepped to the plate with two outs and the winning run 180' away. Jones ripped a 3-2 pitch into center field allowing Burrus to score the game-winning run easily.

On the hill, James Parr gave up two runs on three hits through six innings of work. He didn't allow a run until the sixth inning, but thanks to the M-Braves run in the bottom of that inning he left the game with a 3-2 lead. Brad Nelson gave up four runs on three hits in one inning of work. Charlie Morton didn't allow a run and gave up only one hit in two innings of work to earn his third win of '07.

Robert Rohrbaugh gave up four runs on nine hits through 4.2 innings pitched. Jose De La Cruz gave up two runs on three hits in an third of an inning. Kam Mickolio gave up a run on two hits in 2.2 innings and suffered his first loss of the year.

With this win and the Suns win over MOB, the M-Braves lead in the Southern League South division is still at 5.0 games. With 12 games to play in the first half of the Southern League Season, Mississippi's magic number is now 8.

The Mississippi Braves and the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx play game four of this five-game series tomorrow night at 7:05 pm. Mississippi is scheduled to send lefty Jo-Jo Reyes (6-1, 4.18) to the hill in search of his seventh win of '07 while West Tenn is scheduled to counter with righty Joe Woerman (3-3, 3.02) who's looking for his fourth win.
