Austin FC News Release
Austin, TEXAS - Major League Soccer (MLS) today announced Austin FC defender Jon Gallagher as 1 of 26 players selected to the league's 2023 All-Star roster. Gallagher is the second-ever Austin FC player to be named an MLS All-Star. He will compete against English Premier League side Arsenal FC on Wednesday, July 19 in the MLS All-Star Game Presented by Target at Audi Field in Washington, D.C.
"I'm honored and excited to have been voted to the MLS All-Star roster," said Gallagher. "I'd like to thank my family, teammates, and coaches for their support in helping me achieve what has long been a career goal of mine, and I can't wait to represent Austin FC at the All-Star festivities next month."
Gallagher joined Austin FC ahead of the Club's inaugural season in 2021 and has since become a vital part of the team. Capable of playing in a variety of roles in the wide areas, he has excelled as a fullback on both the right and left flanks, leading Austin in goal contributions (8) and tying for the team lead in goals (5) so far this season. His goal contributions total is also tied for the most among all MLS defenders.
Gallagher has nine (9) goals and eight (8) assists in 78 total MLS appearances for Austin, including scoring the first-ever MLS goal at Q2 Stadium in the Verde & Black's 4-1 win over Portland Timbers on July 1, 2021.
"Jon has been an important member of this Club since the beginning. He has worked hard and excelled in his development from winger to fullback, enabling him to become one of the most productive players in the league at his position," said Austin FC Head Coach Josh Wolff. "We're very proud of him for having earned this well-deserved All-Star recognition. We all wish to congratulate him and his family on this tremendous achievement and look forward to cheering him on."
Gallagher was one 1 of 12 players on the All-Star roster selected by a combination of fan, media, and MLS player voting. Another 12 were chosen by All-Star Head Coach Wayne Rooney of host club D.C. United, and a further two (2) were chosen by MLS Commissioner Don Garber.
