San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants knocked out a season-high 18 hits and received a dominant start from Jordan Johnson in a 12-4 blowout victory over the Modesto Nuts on Sunday afternoon at Municipal Stadium. Jose Vizcaino, Jr. and Jonah Arenado each drove in four runs to lead the offensive attack as San Jose (7-8) earned a split of the four-game series.

Johnson (2-1), who took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, picked-up the win for the Giants. The right-hander tossed six scoreless innings with just one hit allowed during his stint on the mound. Johnson walked two and struck out five.

C.J Hinojosa (4-for-5, 2B, RBI) had four hits for San Jose while Chris Shaw (3-for-4, 2B, HR, 2 RBI) and Arenado (3-for-5, HR, 4 RBI) each homered as part of three-hit games at the plate. Vizcaino, Jr. (2-for-5, 2B, 4 RBI), Johneshwy Fargas (2-for-5) and Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-5, 2B) also finished with two hits apiece.

The Giants jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings on Sunday. In the bottom of the first, Fargas led off with a single before Hinojosa singled with one out. A walk to Shaw then loaded the bases for San Jose. Vizcaino, Jr. was up next and he belted a 2-2 pitch from Nuts starter Jesus Tinoco off the warning track in deep center for a double. The hit scored both Fargas and Hinojosa with the first two runs of the contest. After Steven Duggar struck out, Arenado stepped to the plate and lined a clutch two-out, two-run single into right for a 4-0 advantage.

The Giants kept the pressure on with three more runs in the bottom of the second. Brandon Bednar led off with a double into the left center field gap before Fargas reached on a bunt single. After Fargas was thrown out at second attempting to steal, Tinoco uncorked a wild pitch allowing Bednar to score the fifth San Jose run of the day. Then with two down, Hinojosa restarted the rally with a single before Shaw crushed a fly ball over the fence in left center for a two-run homer and a 7-0 cushion. The home run was Shaw's second of the season.

Areando pushed the lead to 8-0 when he led off the bottom of the third with a home run to left center - his third round-tripper of the year. Then in the fourth, Hinojosa doubled with one out, moved to third on Shaw's single and scored on Vizcaino's groundout for a 9-0 margin.

Meanwhile, Johnson allowed only one Modesto hitter to reach base over the first five innings - a two-out walk to Will Rogers in the top of the fourth. Johnson retired 11 straight Nuts hitters to begin his start and then set down four more in a row entering the top of the sixth.

With the score still 9-0, Johnson issued a leadoff walk to Collin Ferguson in the sixth before Luis Jean lined a single into left for Modesto's first hit of the game. Johnson though was able to strand both runners as he struck out Max White, induced Forrest Wall to groundout and struck out Rogers to end the inning.

The Giants then pushed across three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 12-0. Jebavy led off with a double down the left field line before coming home on Hinojosa's single up the middle. After Shaw doubled to put runners on second and third, Vizcaino, Jr. grounded out to plate Hinojosa with the second run of the inning. Then with two outs, Arenado blooped a single down the right field line scoring Shaw to score the 12th and final San Jose run of the afternoon.

The Nuts scored four runs over the final three innings against the Giants bullpen, but still fell well short. Pat Young (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 0 SO) pitched the top of the seventh and yielded one run on Ferguson's two-out RBI single. In the eighth, Roberto Ramos smacked a two-out, two-run homer off of Reyes Moronta (1 IP, 1 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO). Then in the ninth, an unearned tally against Rodolfo Martinez (1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 0 SO) brought the final margin to 12-4.

Tinoco (0-3) suffered the loss for Modesto after allowing seven runs (all earned) on nine hits over two innings. He walked one and struck out three.
