Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes will have to settle for a series split after dropping the finale against the Visalia Rawhide, 4-3.
Visalia took jumped out to an early 1-0 against Grant Holmes and Quakes, after the Rawhide strung together back-to-back hits with two out. Domingo Leyba hit a single and then Rudy Flores followed with a double to score Leyba, which made it 1-0 Visalia.
Rancho knotted the game at one in the third. Andrew Toles led off with his team-leading sixth double of the season, and advanced to third base on a passed ball. Then Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder and minor league rehabber, Carl Crawford, hit an RBI ground out to score Toles to make it 1-1.
The Quakes took the lead in the fourth inning. Paul Hoenecke led off the frame with a solo shot off of Rawhide starter Wei-Chieh Huang. Hoenecke's blast was his second of the season, and it gave Rancho a 2-1 lead. The Quakes scored another run in the fourth thanks to a pair of two-out hits. Julian Leon doubled, and he was singled home by Erick Mejia to give the Quakes a 3-1 lead, which ultimately knock Huang out of the game.
But Rancho's lead was short lived. Holmes surrendered three runs in the top of the fifth. Cody Regis and Colin Bray each led off with singles, and Leyba hit a double to bring them both home to tie the game at 3-3. After Leyba was thrown out trying to score on a fielder's choice, Rudy Flores singled, advanced to second base on a fielder's choice, and scored on a Dawell Lugo RBI single. That put Visalia ahead for good as they went on to win, 4-3.
The Quakes had a quality scoring chance in the seventh inning, as they had the bases loaded with just one out. But, Visalia reliever Luis Ramirez got Kyle Garlick to strike out and Johan Mieses to ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
Holmes (2-1), was charged with the loss. He allowed all four runs to score on eight hits in five inning of work. Alex Burgos and Joe Broussard each tossed two scoreless innings out of the Quakes bullpen.
Bud Jeter (3-0), picked up the win in relief for Visalia. He went 1.1 innings, and allowed one hit while striking out two. Jimmie Sherfy earned save number four after throwing a scoreless ninth inning. The Rawhide used six different pitchers in this game to squeak out one-run win and earn a split in this series.
The Quakes (11-7) have an off day on Monday, and will hit the road for three games against Inland Empire starting on Tuesday. First pitch on Tuesday is at 7:05 p.m. PT. Tommy Bergjans (1-1) will go for the Quakes in game one of that series, and he will be opposed by 66er starter, Jeremy Rhoades (1-2).
