Johnson City Doughboys News Release
Despite some excellent work from their bullpen, Johnson City fell 4-0 to Kingsport on Sunday evening at TVA Credit Union Ballpark.
Doughboys pitchers Miguel Fulgencio, Damon Cox, and Ian Foggo combined to retire the final 13 Axmen batters of the game across 4 1/3 innings with nine strikeouts.
However, thanks to four early runs in the second and third innings of Sunday's seven-inning contest, Kingsport (9-12) already had enough support to secure their first shutout win of the summer.
Sunday's game continued a theme of dominant Kingsport pitching against Johnson City. Over the last 32 innings of non-extra inning gameplay dating back to last Saturday, Kingsport has given up just two earned runs to the Doughboys in four games.
The home loss pushes Johnson City (8-12-1) back into fifth in the West Division of the Appalachian League.
The Doughboys will be lamenting lost chances, as they went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
Two particular innings were especially costly--in the fourth inning, Johnson City got two runners on with one out but came away with nothing, and in the fifth inning, they loaded the bases with two outs and couldn't score.
Steven Ondina went 2-for-3 with a walk and Jaxson Crull finished 1-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.
Johnson City will have an off-day on Monday before starting a two-game road series in Elizabethton on Tuesday against the River Riders.
