Carolina Mudcats News Release
ZEBULON - The Carolina Mudcats, in conjunction with Minor League Baseball, are thrilled to announce that outfielder Joey Wiemer has been named the Low-A East Player of the Week for the week ending on August 8. Wiemer led Low-A East players in average, on-base, slugging, OPS, hits, home runs, RBI, extra base hits and total bases during the last week of games.
In all, Wiemer hit a league best .583 (14-for-24) last week while also setting league highs with a .630 on-base, 1.280 slugging, 1.838 OPS, 14 hits, four home runs and 12 RBI during the week of games running from August 2 through August 8. His league leading four home runs last week included a walk-off home run on August 5, two home runs including a grand slam on August 6, and another walk-off homer on August 7.
Wiemer, 22, began his award-winning week without a hit in game one of a doubleheader on August 4 versus Kannapolis, but went on to go 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored in game two. That two-hit night would be the first of five straight multi-hit games for the Carolina outfielder versus the Cannon Ballers. It also came in the first game of Carolina's five game winning streak as they took five of six games against Kannapolis at Five County Stadium.
Wiemer continued his torrid week with one of the more memorable performances in team history; one that ended with a walk-off, two-run home run on the first pitch of the 11th inning on August 5 versus Kannapolis. Wiemer went 4-for-5 that night with the walk-off blast and a single in the ninth that led to him scoring the game tying run to force extras.
The Sylvania, OH born Wiemer then went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run and a grand slam on August 6 versus the Cannon Ballers. He also drove in a career high six RBI that night while leading the Mudcats to their third straight win in the series. That game saw his first career grand slam and his first career two-homer game.
Wiemer then hit his second walk-off homer in three games as he led the Mudcats to their fourth straight win on August 7 at Five County Stadium. His second game-winning home run of the series was a three-run blast off Cannon Ballers' reliever Karan Patel (who also allowed Wiemer's first walk-off blast two nights prior) in the 12th and was his third hit of the night. Wiemer went 3-for-4 with a run, two walks and four RBI that night on August 7 before concluding his phenomenal week going 2-for-4 with a double in the series finale on August 8.
The Brewers selected Wiemer in the fourth round of the 2020 MLB June Amateur Draft from the University of Cincinnati. He is currently in his first season in the Brewers farm system and will now continue his season with High-A Wisconsin as Milwaukee promoted him today. He played in 75 games with the Mudcats and hit .276/.391/.478 with a .868 OPS, 11 doubles, two triples, 13 home runs and 44 RBI before moving on to High-A.
With Wiemer's award-winning week, the Mudcats have now earned a total of six Low-A East Player and Pitcher of the Week Awards this season. Pitcher Brendan Murphy was the most recent Mudcats player to earn the weekly honor after he was named the Low-A East Pitcher of the Week for the week of July 12 through July 18. Infielder Felix Valerio also earned the weekly honor for the week of June 7 through June 13 and former Carolina outfielder Joe Gray Jr. earned back-to-back Player of the Week awards for the weeks of May 24 through May 30 and May 31 through June 6. Pitcher Justin Bullock was the first Carolina player to earn the weekly award this season as he was the Low-A East Pitcher of the Week for the week of May 10 through May 16.
The Carolina Mudcats are the official Low-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. First established in 1991, the two-time Southern League Champion Mudcats are in their 31st consecutive season of baseball at Five County Stadium in Zebulon, N.C. The Mudcats are owned and operated by the Milwaukee Brewers.
