Joes, Redfish Suspended Due to Light Failure

July 19, 2007 - South Coast League (SCL)
Anderson Joes News Release

The Anderson Joes took a 2-0 lead into the top of the fifth inning against the Charlotte County Redfish on Thursday when four failed light fixtures led to the suspension of the game due to lack of light on the playing field.

The game will resume tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. and conclude from the point at which it stopped in the top of the fifth. The Joes and Redfish will then play their scheduled 9-inning game in its entirety after the conclusion of the remainder of the suspended game.

Initial speculation is that lightning strikes very close to Anderson Memorial Stadium knocked out the outfield lights as well as the left-field scoreboard, which was only half-operational.

Anderson had just scored two runs at the time of the suspension. Rafael Alvarez, in his Joes debut, scored on a Richard Quihuis-Bell RBI double in the fourth inning. Heath Keel later drove Quihuis-Bell in with an RBI single to give Anderson the advantage.

Starting pitcher Ronald Ball had seven strikeouts through four shutout innings before the lights would not come on, thus suspending the game.

As per league rules, the conclusion of the suspended game must be played before the initiation of another regularly scheduled game between two teams. This means at 6:05 tomorrow night, Anderson and Charlotte County will pick up right where they left off -- about to start the top of the fifth inning. After they finish the remainder of the suspended game, the Joes and Redfish will play game two in its entirety roughly a half hour after the conclusion of game one.
