Anderson Joes News Release
But like any good protagonist, the Joes triumphed Tuesday, handing the Juice a 13-10 defeat at Anderson Memorial Stadium to win the final meeting and series of the year between the two clubs.
Trailing 3-0 early, it looked like Anderson (20-18, 44-38 overall) wouldn't be able to overcome Nick Corbeil's first-inning, three-run home run for the longest time. Having later squeezed out a run in the sixth, the Joes trailed 3-1 going into an historic top of the eighth inning.
In the eighth, Anderson sent 13 hitters to the plate, tying a league record with 10 runs scored in the inning. Everybody one-through-nine scored in the frame for the Joes, highlighted by Tanner Rogers' go-ahead, two-run single and Heath Keel's grand slam to cap the scoring, just the second grand slam in Joes history.
"You always hear that hitting is contagious and for us in that eighth inning it was huge," Rogers said. "You get one guy on and the next guy on where it just flows throughout the dugout."
Bradenton (21-17, 33-50) wasn't done, though, scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth and four in the bottom of the ninth.
Rogers' last hit of the night provided ample insurance, however, as his two-run home run in the top of the ninth had given the Joes a seven-run cushion to withstand the Juice's late rally.
The 13-run output was the third highest in Joes history and marked the first time this season Anderson has scored double-digit runs in back-to-back games.
It wasn't all Rogers and Keel who helped the Joes. Also contributing were Chris Demons with two runs and an RBI and Richard Quihuis-Bell with a run and an RBI of his own. Of the Joes' starting position players, everyone either drove in a run or scored a run.
Tyler Addison earned the win, taking over in the seventh inning and delivering a scoreless frame before the Joes erupted. He improved to 2-5.
Lavelle Morgan took the loss in relief for Bradenton, allowing eight of the 10 runs scored in the eight, although only two were earned, in lasting just a third of an inning. He dropped his record to 5-7.
With the win, Anderson jumped into third place in the second-half standings, taking a one-game lead over Bradenton with six games left for the Joes to play.
Anderson must win its remaining six games to have a chance of winning the second half and earning the final playoff spot in the league.
After a day off tomorrow, the Joes welcome the Charlotte County Redfish for the final homestand of the season Thursday.
"We're taking the same mindset we've always had," Rogers said. "We've turned things around in the second half. With every win it's a confidence. We're just looking to go out and play like we've played for the last month."
