Jhonny on the Spot; 'Hounds Win 8th Straight
July 13, 2021 - Texas League (TL)
Midland RockHounds News Release
The RockHounds broke a 2-2 tie in the last of the eighth inning with two big swings of the bat and held off an Amarillo ninth-inning rally to claim a 5-4 win over the Sod Poodles in the opener of a six-game series Tuesday night at Momentum Bank Ballpark.
The win was the RockHounds' eighth-in-a-row, a season high.
Trailing, 2-0, entering in the last of the fifth, the 'Hounds got back-to-back singles from Yerdel Vargas and Mickey McDonald, and Nick Allen followed with a two-run double to left-center to tie the game.
With the game still even at 2-2, Devin Foyle drew a walk to open the home half of the eighth. JJ Schwarz then ripped a line drive RBI double to right field and, two pitches later, Jhonny Santos launched a two-run home run over the high wall in left field driving in what would be the eventual game-winning runs.
Amarillo rallied back in the ninth on RBI hits from Ryder Jones (double) and Buddy Kennedy (single) before Aaron Brown got Renae Martinez to ground out to end the game. The two earned runs allowed by Brown were the first in his last 10 appearances, but the left-hander rebounded to close the door, earning his eighth save in as many opportunities.
Kibbles & Bits
For the 2021 season, Jhonny Santos has four home runs and 17 runs batted in. Three of the home runs and nine of the RBI have come in his last six games.
JJ Schwarz had a big night, going 3-for-3 (double, walk) and has now reached base in 20 consecutive games ... Nick Allen (2-run double) has reached base in 25-of-26 games ... and, while Devin Foyle went 0-for-3, he has reached base in 33-of-34 games and the walk he drew to open the eighth started the game-winning rally.
