LONG BEACH, Calif. (Dec. 23, 2004) - The American Basketball Association (ABA) Long Beach Jam signed former NBA center Jelani McCoy, it was announced.
McCoy entered the NBA in 1998 as the 33rd pick overall. He brings to the Jam six years of NBA experience, which will be crucial in their effort to retain the title of ABA champion. He also knows about big games and pressure situations having been part of the Los Angeles Lakers during their 2002 NBA title run.
McCoy is a product of the UCLA basketball program. In his three years under coach Steve Lavin, McCoy averaged more than 10 points per game. He is also a major presence on the glass having averaged nearly seven rebounds per contest in college and grabbing a career-high 15 rebounds twice in his NBA career.
"We have assembled a great group of athletes," said Jam President Steve Chase. "But we've needed help in the low post and with McCoy's height and size he is exactly the player we have been looking for."
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
