Jays Fall in Series Finale 5-3 to Mets
August 19, 2018 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
The Dunedin Blue Jays were unable to build momentum off of last night's win over the St. Lucie Mets, falling 5-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Jays offense, leading the league in batting average and runs in the month of August, was out-hit 13-6 in the loss, giving Dunedin a disappointing 1-6 record during this week's home stand. With the loss, Dunedin has dropped 12 of their last 14 games to tumble from first place with two weeks remaining in the season.
St. Lucie took an early lead in the top of the first, scoring twice off RHP Yennsy Diaz. Desmond Lindsay opened the game with a triple off the left field wall and scored when the game's second batter grounded out to second. A single by rehabbing David Wright, walk to Jeremy Vasquez, and a single by Quinn Brodey loaded the bases. A walk to Anthony Dimino forced in the second Mets run of the game.
The Blue Jays answered with two runs in the home half of the second to tie the score. C Riley Adams was hit in the helmet by a pitch to lead off the inning. He left the game as a precaution, being replaced by C Alberto Mineo on the base paths. After a strike out and a fly out put two outs on the scoreboard, RF Rodrigo Orozco singled to left. A passed ball moved Mineo and Orozco into scoring position. 3B Nash Knight singled up the midle to score Mineo and a wild pitch brought home Orozco to tie the game.
Diaz settled in after the first inning, keeping St. Lucie off the scoreboard into the fifth inning. He allowed four additional hits on the afternoon (three by a combination of Jay Bruce and David Wright). He exited with one out in the fifth with a pair of runners on base after allowing back-to-back singles by Wright and Bruce, finishing with a final line of 4.1 innings pitched, seven hits, two runs, three walks, and one strikeout.
RHP William Ouellette entered and quickly escaped the jam, using a fly out and a strike out to strand both inherited runners.
In the sixth inning, Oullette allowed a leadoff single but quickly spun a double play ball. After a single by Blake Tiberi, Desmond Lindsay hit a flailing pop fly off the end of his bat between first and second. Forced to decide whether to catch the tailing pop up in the air or field it on a hop, Castlilo at second was unable to do either, as the ball squirted underneath his glove for an error. The next hitter, Gene Cone, lined a two-run double to give the Mets the lead.
Both teams traded runs in the seventh inning, making the score 5-3, the eventual final score. The Dunedin offense had just one hit after the sixth inning and went down in order in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the win for St. Lucie.
In a bright spot for Dunedin, RHP Bryan Baker made his second appearance with Dunedin after being acquired from the Colorado Rockies earlier this week. In his first outing with the Blue Jays on Wednesday, a travel-weary Baker tossed a scoreless inning and a third with a fastball that sat 88-91 miles per hour. This afternoon, the now-rested righty sat consistently in the high 90s with his fastball, striking out the side in the ninth inning.
With the loss, Dunedin falls back below .500 on the season with the loss at 62-63 while their second half record drops to 31-25. Trailing Clearwater by 5.5 games in the North Division, the Jays will have an off-day on Monday before heading to Clearwater to start a three-game set on Tuesday.
