Toledo Mud Hens News Release

The International League announced today that Toledo right-hander Jason Grilli has been named the International League's Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 23-May 29.

Grilli pitched just the fourth complete game shutout this season by any pitcher in the IL on May 27 at Columbus. He allowed only four Clippers to reach base safely and struck out eight batters in the process.

The 28-year-old, former first round pick on the San Francisco Giants evened his record at 3-3 after the shutout and dropped his ERA to 3.04, ninth best in the IL. Grilli has been hot the whole month of May. He has gone 2-1 with a lean ERA of 2.12. Grill has also struck out 34 batters in as many innings this month.

This is Grilli's eighth professional season, his first as a member of the Detroit Tigers organization. He signed as a minor league free agent on February 8, 2005 after pitching for Charlotte (AAA) and Chicago (AL) last season. Overall, Grilli has posted a 40-35 record with a 4.61 ERA in the minor leagues, and a 5-5 record with a 6.78 ERA in the big leagues. Grilli's collegiate career was impressive as a member of the Seton Hall Pirates. He picked up 19 career wins and holds the single-season school record for most strikeouts with 125.

Grilli is not a new name to the Mud Hens. Jason's dad, Steve Grilli, toed the rubber for the Hens during parts of the 1972 and 1973 seasons. Steve Grilli also took part in the longest baseball game in history. Unfortunately, he came out the losing pitcher in the 33-inning marathon.
