Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Reno, NV - The Tacoma Rainiers (35-45) won their season-best fifth straight game and have won seven of eight for the second time in 2022 (June 8-16), after running past the Reno Aces (41-40) by a 16-9 final on Thursday. Tacoma is out to a 3-0 series lead at the midpoint of this weeklong road set, and have won 18 of their last 27 games at Reno.
The Rainiers racked up a season-high 21 hits; seven players had multiple base knocks and four players had three (or more) hits. Eight different Rainiers drove in a run Thursday. The previous 2022 Tacoma hit high was 18, in a 13-7 win on June 22 at Sugar Land.
Reno grabbed a short-lived 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Seth Beer lifted a two-run double to center. In the third, the Rainiers enjoyed their eighth inning this season of five or more runs, and the six-spot was Tacoma's biggest inning since a seven-run seventh in a 14-10 win on May 8 at Salt Lake. Only seven half innings were not scored in on Thursday, as Tacoma also set a new season-high in runs. Five Rainiers homers equaled a season-high, also from May 8.
Jarred Kelenic (3-5, BB, 2 RBI) drilled his ninth Triple-A home run of the season to lead off the third, a 428-foot rocket to right field. Kevin Padlo and Erick Mejia (4-6, RBI) followed with singles, but were still on base with two out. The Rainiers rallied for five more runs with two away, on RBI singles from Joe Odom (3-6, 3 RBI) and Forrest Wall (4-6, 3 RBI), before a Trey Amburgey three-run homer to the opposite field in right made the score 6-2. For Amburgey, it was his first home run with Tacoma, after joining the Seattle organization on June 25 following a trade from Cincinnati and Triple-A Louisville.
Tacoma tacked on another in the fourth, when Kelenic tripled past a diving left fielder. Still at third base with two out, Kelenic trotted home on a Brian O'Keefe double cranked to the left field corner. Leading 7-2 in the fifth, Tacoma tallied their seventh and eighth two-out runs of the night; Padlo (single) scored Amburgey (single), and Mejia's third hit (single) scored Kelenic (fielder's choice).
It was a different ballgame after the Aces scored four runs in the home fifth; Jake McCarthy (single), Dominic Miroglio (2-run double) and Camden Duzenack (double) had the RBI hits to trim Tacoma's lead to 9-6.
Drew Ellis and Odom homered on consecutive pitches to begin the sixth inning, the seventh time this season Tacoma's hit back-to-back home runs, and the score was 11-6. It was a six-run lead on Kelenic's third hit, an RBI double smoked into the right-center gap that scored Wall, who doubled for his third hit following the homers.
The Rainiers scored in a fifth consecutive inning in the seventh. Mejia's fourth hit was a double to right, and he came home on an Odom two-out single, his third knock of the night and the 20th Tacoma hit of the game.
The scoring wouldn't cease without a pair of Reno homers; Miroglio (game-high 4 RBI) for two runs in the seventh and Stone Garrett hit his 20th in the eighth (solo), tightening the score to 14-9. Tacoma added a run on a double play ball in the eighth, and scored in the game's final seven innings when Wall's fourth hit was a two-run homer to the right field alley in the ninth (Ellis walk), plating the 10th and 11th Rainiers RBI with two out.
The fourth game of the series will be Friday night at Greater Nevada Field. RHP Darren McCaughan (Tacoma) and RHP Corbin Martin (Reno) are the scheduled starting pitchers, for a 6:35 p.m. PT start.
Rainiers broadcaster Mike Curto will have full coverage on TacomaRainiers.com. All 2022 Rainiers games, home and away, can also be heard for free on the MiLB First Pitch app. HD video broadcasts of every game can be viewed with a MiLB.TV subscription.
