Prince George Cougars News Release

Prince George, B.C. - The Prince George Cougars are thrilled to announce that our 2014-15 Most Valuable Player Jansen Harkins (North Vancouver, B.C.) has been selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round (47th overall) of the 2015 NHL Draft. Harkins becomes the first Cougar selected in the 2015 NHL Draft and the first ever Cougar to have ever been selected by the Winnipeg Jets.

"On behalf of our entire ownership group, we are very proud of Jansen and all that he has accomplished to this point in his hockey career," said Prince George Cougars President, Greg Pocock. "He is a terrific ambassador for our team and our city, and he has demonstrated the necessary work ethic, focus and desire needed to be a professional hockey player."

"All of Jansen Harkins' success to this point in his young career has been well deserved," adds Prince George Cougars Head Coach, Mark Holick. "Everything he does is with professional hockey in mind, and this experience will only help his confidence moving forward. He's going to be a big part of our team next season and I know that he's up for the challenge. The Winnipeg Jets picked a great player and a great person."

Originally selected by the Prince George Cougars second overall in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, the 6'1", 182 pound forward, and alternate captain led the Prince George Cougars in scoring this season with 79 points (20 goals, 59 assists) in 70 games. His 59 assists set a new franchise record for most assists in a single season. On February 16, 2015 in Edmonton, Harkins recorded his 100th career WHL point making him the second fastest Prince George Cougar to ever reach that milestone. In five playoff games, Harkins tallied four assists. During his rookie campaign in the WHL (2013-14), Harkins led all Cougar rookies in scoring with 34 points (10 goals, 24 assists) in 67 games.

Internationally Harkins has represented Canada on three separate occasions. Most recently Harkins suited up for Canada at the World Under-18 championships in Switzerland and captured a bronze medal. In August 2014, Harkins earned a gold medal with Canada at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Harkins also served as captain for Team Pacific during the 2013-14 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and helped lead his team to a silver medal.

Jansen Harkins is the third member of his immediate family to have been drafted to the NHL. His father Todd Harkins is the Prince George Cougars General Manager, and was drafted by the Calgary Flames in the second round of the 1988 NHL Draft and played 48 games in the NHL with Calgary and Hartford. His uncle Brett Harkins was picked in the seventh round of the 1989 draft by the New York Islanders and played 78 NHL games with Boston, Florida and Columbus. His other uncle Don Harkins currently serves as the Director of U.S. Scouting for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League.

The Prince George Cougars want to congratulate Jansen Harkins on this remarkable accomplishment.
