Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. - The Jamestown Jammers lost their season ï¬Ânale, 8-5, Sunday afternoon at Diethrick Park as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers built an insurmountable lead in ï¬Ârst inning.
Starting pitcher Dejai Oliver, who has struggled during the ï¬Ârst inning all season, gave up ï¬Âve runs in the opening frame to allow the Scrappers to complete just the second sweep of the Jammers all season.
Kentrell Dewitt sparked the Jamestown offense with a double, a triple and two RBI. Brian McConkey added a pair of hits including a double, and Yefri Perez chipped in two singles and a RBI.
While the offense played well, it faced a huge hole after Mahoning Valley raced out to an early lead.
John Barr tripled to start the game and scored on a RBI ground out. After Jake Lowery walked, Oliver got the second out on a strikeout; however, the next four batters had base outs to bust the game open. Todd Hankins had a RBI single before KC Serna reached on a single of his own. Jerrud Sabourin then connected for a two-run double before Evan Frazar capped the scoring with a hit to left to make it 5-0.
After getting off to a sluggish start, the Jamestown offense stormed back with four runs in the fourth, and it all came with two outs.
Austin Barnes reached on an error to start the frame and advanced to third following a McConkey single and a double play. Eddie Rodriguez had a RBI single before Viosergy Rosa walked to put runners at ï¬Ârst and second. Perez followed with a RBI hit, and Kentrell Dewitt connected for a two-run double to make it 5-4.
Mahoning Valley responded as Barr and Sabourin had RBI doubles in the sixth and seventh to stretch the lead to three before Francisco Lindor came in to score on a wild pitch in the eighth.
In the home half of the eighth, Jamestown tried to mount a comeback. Ryan McIntyre connected for a single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch. Josh Adams ripped a double to straightaway center with two outs to plate Jamestown's ï¬Âfth run, but he was left stranded on base to end the threat.
Jamestown tried one more time in the ninth as Dewitt connected for a two-out triple, but closer Enosil Tejeda got the next batter to ground out to earn his 12th save and end the 2011 season for both teams.
Tony Dischler earned the win after giving up four unearned runs in three innings on the bump to improve to 1-2, while Oliver fell to 1-5 after giving up ï¬Âve runs and striking out ï¬Âve in three innings.
Serna paced the Scrappers with three hits and two runs scored as six of the nine Mahoning Valley starters ï¬Ânished with multiple hits.
The loss means the Jammers close the 2011 season at 35-40 and fall short of the postseason for just the second time in the last four years.
