Norwich Sea Unicorns News Release

NORWICH, CT - The Connecticut Tigers needed a victory on Sunday afternoon to be crowned champs of the Stedler Division in the New York-Penn League for 2011, but a collapse on the final day of the season saw the Tigers fall 6-5 to the Lowell Spinners in 16 innings at Dodd Stadium and out of the playoffs.

Brennan Smith had a 34.2 scoreless innings streak snapped in the fifth frame. Matt Gedman led off with a base hit and moved around to third on a couple of groundouts. Keury De La Cruz then came through with an RBI single giving the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Lowell added a run in the seventh on a sac fly from Drew Turocy, scoring Tim Roberson, who started the innings with a single.

The Tigers threatened in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded the bases with two outs, but Eugenio Suarez flew out to end the inning.

The Spinners broke the game open with three runs in the eighth. Jose Garcia, Adalberto Ibarra and Matt Marquis all hit consecutive doubles, while Roberson drove in the final run of the inning on a RBI single.

Luis Diaz pitched a great game from Lowell, tossing six shutout frames and allowing just four hits.

However, the Tigers made a furious comeback with four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game and send it to extras.

In the top of the 16th frame De La Cruz led off with ball hit into left field. Tyler Collins misjudged it and it popped out of his glove. De La Cruz would eventually get to third base and score the winning run on a wild pitch from Nick Avila.

Roberto Ramos tossed two hitless innings to finish of the win for Lowell.

Matt Perry finished 3-for-5 with an RBI on the day, while Dean Green ended his stellar first pro season going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI's.
