Jacksonville Slam News Release
The Jacksonville Jam went on the road to South Florida on Monday night to defeat the Miami Tropics for their second straight win of the young ABA season!
The Jam fought back from an eleven point deficit in the second half to secure the victory on the road. Down 58-47 in the third quarter Jacksonville went on a 18-2 run to come back and take control of the game. Derrick Williams, who led this comeback by the Jam scored four consecutive baskets in the run. The Jam then went on to lead by as many as eleven points in the second half before they fought off a fierce fourth quarter rally to pull out the win. The Tropics cut the Jam lead to just one point with 20.1 seconds to play when Tropics leading scorer, Carlos Escalera hit a three pointer and was fouled by Williams. Escalera hit the free-throw to make the score 99-98! The Jam then handled the Tropics full-court pressure and converted from the free-throw line to finish the game. Donald Harris, Tony Holley, and Williams hit key free-throws in the final seconds to hold off the Tropics and secure victory #2 for the Jacksonville Jam.
Jacksonville had six players in double figures as Derrick Williams led the way with 21 points. Jerry Williams had 19 points, Anthony Lumpkin 18 points. Deron Rutledge and TheAnthony Haymon chipped in 13 and 10 points respectively. Carlos Escalera led Miami with a game high 28 points.
