Dayton Gems News Release

DAYTON, OH ‚¬" The Central Hockey League announced Tuesday that Dayton Gems ‚¬â„¢ goaltender Jeff Jakaitis is the Oakley CHL Goalie of the Week for the week of December 13 - December 19.

Jakaitis had a pair of stellar performances last weekend. Against Bloomington on Friday, Jakaitis had 44 saves and recorded the Gems ‚¬â„¢ first shutout (4-0) of the season. On Saturday, Jakaitis allowed just two goals on 34 shots. His 32 saves helped the Gems complete a 3-2 comeback victory over Fort Wayne.

The wins also snapped a three-game losing streak for Dayton.

‚¬Å“After dropping three straight, we needed a good weekend and that ‚¬â„¢s what we had, ‚¬Â said Jakaitis. ‚¬Å“I just went out there and did my best to help the team. I think it was an impressive weekend for all of us. ‚¬Â

While Jakaitis is a bit modest about winning the honor, head coach Brian Gratz seemed to be a bit more excited for his goaltender.

‚¬Å“He ‚¬â„¢s just an elite athlete, ‚¬Â said Gratz. ‚¬Å“For what he ‚¬â„¢s been doing for us this season, I ‚¬â„¢m surprised he didn ‚¬â„¢t get it (the Oakley CHL Goalie of the Week award) earlier in the season. ‚¬Â

Jakaitis has played in 18 games and has a 10-7-1 record this season. He has recorded 598 saves and has a save percentage of .929. He has also recorded 1079 minutes of playing time so far this season.

The Kettering Medical Center is proud to be the official title sponsor of the Gems for the 2010-11 season.
