Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, Texas- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees (13-12-3) moved above .500 with a 5-1 victory over the Laredo Bucks (9-13-4) on Tuesday night at the State Farm Arena. The Bees were led by Aaron Lewicki and Zak McClellan who each scored a pair of goals. The Bees also earn an 11 to eight lead in the first-ever Cricket Mayor's Cup.
The Bees winning streak is extended to five games, their first five game winning streak since January of 2009. The Killer Bees have also defeated the Laredo Bucks in three straight games, their first three game winning streak against their South Texas rival since 2005.
The Killer Bees struck first with a power-play strike by Aaron Lewicki at 7:01. The Bees had been held without a power-play goal in three straight games before tonight. Darcy Campbell and Kyle Radke both picked up assists on the goal.
The Bees doubled their lead at 14:33 with a Zak McClellan strike. Kyle Radke dumped the puck into the zone off the back boards. Laredo goalie Pier Pelletier tried to play the puck but missed and the free puck bounced right to McClellan with an open net.
At the end of the first period of play the Bees held a 2-0 lead despite being outshot 10-9.
The Bees increased their lead to three goals in the second period as Tomas Klempa netted his team leading 14th goal of the season. Klempa picked up the puck in the far-side corner and drove towards the slot. When in the slot Klempa let go a shot that beat Pelletier through the five-hole.
The Bees gave themselves a four-goal lead with only 26 seconds remaining in the second period. Justin Styfee had been handed a two-minute minor for unsportsmanlike conduct and was also given a game misconduct. While on the power-play Bees captain Zak McClellan ripped a shot from the circles that beat Pelleter.
In the third, each team would find the net once with Aaron Lewicki picking up his second goal of the game.
Though he didn't get the shutout Juliano Pagliero played very well in net making 41 saves on on 42 shots faced.
The Bees and Bucks waste no time going back at it and will face-off Wednesday night in Laredo at 7:00 p.m.
