Jacobson Scores Twice in Debut, Wheat Kings Win Shootout Thriller
December 8, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
A WHL debut is a special moment for any young man, a game they will not likely forget. Few players in the league's history, however, authored a debut as memorable as the one Jaxon Jacobson had against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
Jacobson scored twice in the third period and the Wheat Kings took a 5-4 shootout win over the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors. Nate Danielson and Brett Hyland also scored in the win, while Carson Bjarnason stopped 27 shots and seven of nine shootout shooters in the win.
"I thought we deserved better after one," said head coach and GM Marty Murray. "I thought we had a pretty good first period and then it slid a little bit in the second, but I thought we were pretty solid through forty. And then it was a wild third period to say the least... I thought we deserved the two points tonight, I really did."
The game started on the wrong foot for the Wheat Kings as Jagger Firkus scored a beauty just 45 seconds in, dangling his way to the front of the net and tucking home a forehander. But Danielson answered in the second, sniping one home as he broke up the left side and picked a corner.
Before the second was out, Brayden Schuurman had put Moose Jaw ahead again on a breakaway immediately following a penalty kill. Jacobson kicked off the wild third period by picking off a pass, walking in and picking a corner perfectly from the top of the left circle.
"I just saw them miss a breakout pass and took advantage of it," Jacobson said. "We were overpassing a bit tonight so I just shot it and it went in. I was pretty hyped for that."
Moose Jaw quickly quieted the home crowd with two quick goals, as Atley Calvert scored a one-timer and Schuurman potted his second off a goalmouth scramble. Jacobson reignited the fans with a power play goal, a quick snap shot from the top of the umbrella, and Hyland then tied the score after working a cycle with Danielson.
Overtime solved nothing, and neither did the first eight rounds of a shootout. In the ninth, after another big stop by Bjarnason, Jayden Wiens snapped home a wrister on his first ever shootout attempt.
Next up for the Wheat Kings is a game with the Kamloops Blazers. Puck drop on the first meeting between the two teams in Manitoba since 2019 will be at 7:00.
